so yeah, i get in my car this morning to go to work and it refused to start.

the engine rolls once and then stops ... doesnt crank anymore. i know it's not the battery because it doesnt make the same noise as when the battery's dead + i tried boosting it

i ended up pusing it out of my driveway and started it on reverse so i could get to work. i tried to start it at lunch time but same thing happens.

any ideas? i'm thinking the starter but i dont know exactly what the car does or what noise it does when the starter is gone

starter or alternator, leaning more towards altenator since the car is turning over, starter usually just makes clicking noises when its bad.

both are fairly easy to do by yourself, done both on '97 FS-DE 626

hmmm if the alternator's gone, wouldnt the car not run at all?

i was able to start the car by pushing it and drove for about 45mins in stop-go traffic to get to work. at lunch time when i went to check the car, my turbo timer indicated 12.6v when i turned the key so battery is still charged... kinda why i dont think its the alternator

but i dont know much bout this ... do you still think its the alternator (after reading this)?

u may have a bad connection or a faulty cable from the starter...it can still be the battery...and possible starter...alternator should be fine if u got to work on it...u shoulda tried starting it right back off ater u got to work cuz the battery would of been cahrged of the alt...unless its just that bad and wont accept a charge

its not the battery. like i said in my other post, my turbo timer said 12.6v when i put the key in and i tried starting it with a 700a booster pack with same results

thanks guys :) :)

oh and if you do get it started whats your timer say your voltage is?

around 13.6 to 13.8 i think? not sure but it was the same as before

True if it were a bad starter you would just hear clicking

With a Bad alternator she should of still started with the boost.

The fuel filter could be clogged.

Or something with the distributor.

haha i shoulda read this first acuz this is what i basically worte b4...if ur good with a volt meter check line loss ffrom the positve to the starter...should be less then .2v u can also check the ground side and it should be .1 volts this is at 100amps...i dont think our cars push that much tho

maybe it was 14.6 ... i dont remember.

i'll go check if all cables are ok + fuses just in case as soon as i have a few minutes

would not have started of the roll back if he had a fuel issue

Yeah, thats true.

Odd, it would apear it was just flooded, but it would of started after he got it going from the roll start.

The previously stated was agood idea.

Get her started same way as before, then after letting her run for a bit, shut her off then try to start her right away, if it works wait 10 min then try again.

And check your fuse box

@ this point my money is on a broken fuse.

or the starter maybe binding...gotta do a currnet draw test on that...goodluck..ill put money on the starter...gotta go

Usually a starter issue, means she wont crank

WHEN AN ENGINE WON’T START

Every engine requires four basic ingredients to start: sufficient cranking speed, good compression, adequate ignition voltage (with correct timing) and fuel (a relatively rich air/fuel mixture initially). So any time an engine fails to start, you can assume it lacks one of these four essential ingredients. But which one?

To find you, you need to analyze the patient and talk to the vehicle’s owner to get some additional information. If the engine won’t crank, you’re probably dealing with a starter or battery problem. Ask the customer if the starter has been acting up (unusual noises, slow cranking, etc.). Is this the first time the engine has failed to crank or start, or has it happened before? Get details. Have the starter, battery or battery cables been replaced recently? If so, find out what was done. Has the battery been run down recently? Have there been any other electrical problems? The answers to these questions should shed some light on what’s wrong and help focus your diagnostic efforts in a specific direction.

If a DOA engine cranks but refuses to start, it lacks ignition, fuel or compression. Again, questioning the vehicle’s owner may uncover some clues as to why the engine won’t start. Was it running fine but quit suddenly? The most likely causes here would be a failed fuel pump, ignition module or broken overhead cam timing belt. Has the engine been getting progressively harder to start? If you get a yes to this question, further questioning about the vehicle’s maintenance and repair history would be in order. Recent repairs might indicate defective parts or improper installation.

it cant be a flood issue because it started no problem when i pushed it

y'know how it usually cranks 3 or 4 times before it starts? well it cranks once and then stops. it also makes, for about half a second, the noise it makes when you try to start the car when the engine is already running and then there's some kind of electrical noise which i cant really describe and wasnt able to identify because i was sitting in the car =\

i'll try to get some help at work and get someone to turn the key while i go listen to the engine/starter
