Mazda Protege 1999 ES
So my dash broke (argh) and so I went to local Junk Yard to pick up a new one. Talked to the guy and got a deal ($20) on a pretty good looking one.

Now everything pretty much works EXCEPT the temp gauge and the e-brake light. Temp is always on high and E-brake light stays on.

Anyway to fix this?

You pulled a cluster out of a '00+ protege. you need to find a cluster for a '99. they changed the wiring around on the clusters between '00 and '99. The temp gauge is going to stay like that until you pull everything apart and look at a wiring schematic and put the pins in all the right places.
your gas gauge will read off as well depending on what year you pulled it out of

Ahhhhhhh (bang) such a pain in the ass. I figured it be the same since it was a direct plug in. Fuel gauge is working fine though, just drove it till the gas light lit up.

im assuming your car doesn't actually have 212k miles either since the mileage is stored in the odo.

the dealer used to flash them to the correct mileage but you had to have 3 forms of proof to do so. and it was getting abused so they banned it.

Yeah but I mean I don't mind the miles. Rather have everything else working. Just going to have to get another 99 cluster (pissed)

You have to list the mileage as unknown if you swap the cluster with the wrong reading.

you can always take the overlay of the 00+ cluster and put it over the 99 cluster if you lie the look of it that much. the gauges you could swap along with the needles too...just don't pull the needles off. they will break. Take everything apart from the screws in the back.
