1984 Mazda GLC

I got a hooptie for my b'day last October. It's a 1984 Mazda GLC; E5, 1.5 2barrel carb--blah, blah. See loserkidwac's post. (Mine's only TWO different colors!) Help get that man out of the doghouse--it needs a carburetor. Alas, he tells me: "I'm not a carburetor man." Hmmmm. They're $400 in the auto parts store. $500'll getcha whole new motor! It's a cute li'l car and I need it to run. I'm TIRED of waiting for dude to come and get me, sooooo:

Help a sista OUT.

THX!

Oh, yeah.

Grrrr...couldn't log in to answer when you posted, elder!
Anyhoo--nooptie jr (new hooptie) Nooptie was an 86 honda lx with a rebuilt engine and no body rust which I thought myself too cute to drive. Wish I had it now....
Jr runs for a while and then chokes off. Bang (the one in the doghouse) says that it looks as if the carb has some damage, like it caught fire. Nobody wants to try and rebuild it because it's so small. He took it apart and put it back together, but cain't calibrate it. He bought it from a guy he works with, and it had been sitting idle for more than a year. I'm being a princess--it's more than I could do--but I bin waitin a minute and a HALF to drive a tan car w/ one black door....

Thx,
Jdiesel

It does sound like just a carb issue. That can be a whole can of worms by itself. I can point you to a few things. I'm not familiar with the workings of the carb on the car, but I do know a little about the general workings of carbs. First off. There is an idle jet. This is usually the first thing to clog if the car has been sitting for a long time since it has the smallest opening. If this is clogged the car won't idle. There is a main jet which handles everything outside the idle. It has a larger opening that the needle goes into to control the fuel at anything above idle.

The problem you described with the car cranking and running for a minute sounds like a float problem. If the car cranks and then runs it will be pulling gas out of the float bowl. If the float bowl doesn't keep a steady level of gas then the car sucks it dry and it cuts off. Either the gas supply to the carb is messed up or the float hieght isn't correct causing the bowl to not fill up enough. I'll have to do more reseach on the specific carb the GLC has, but those are the basics.

Tyvm!

elder, you are the MAN! I understand just enuf about engines to be dangerous, but I recall an in-depth convo about what you are describing. I appreciate very much the time and thought you put into your reply to me. Another question, Ken the parts guy has a rebuilt carb for $150 shipped from IL. Should I buy it, or keep hope alive with the one I have????

Thx,
JD
