Heavy tick/flapping in the engine

Hello, I am new to the forum and am not exactly car savvy, but I just bought my MSP about two months ago with 77k on it. The dealer said he "rebuilt the engine" however it seems to me he knew there was a problem and sold it knowing it was defective.

I drove the car for about a month before it started giving me problems. I drove it to the gym 2 nights ago and when I got back in to drive home the engine light was on and the engine was making a loud ticking and flapping noise and there was a ton of blow by. My father was been a Mechanic for about 20 years of his life and though he hasn't taken a look at it, he told me I most likely threw a rod. I know I haven't thrown the rod cause the car is still operational, however I am wondering if I just spun a bearing.

So I guess my question would be has anyone spun a bearing with minimal damage to the other engine components or will I likely have to replace the crank and other items. And could that have been my doing I have never run the car past 4,000 rpm..

Any help is appreciated thank you for your time.

welcome to the msp.

a spun bearing can cause rod knock. doesn't mean it's been thrown so to speak. but, you could and prolly do have engine damage. the car may still run, but it'll continually get worse. You could try and see if the bearings are bad, and try replacing them. i know one guy who's done this with success.. good luck!

I'm sure I'll need the luck, might be looking into the lemon laws here in jersey as I literally just bought the car, although I'm sure giving a look see at the engine can't hurt.

Thank you for the reply and the welcome.

no problem. you dont need to lemon the car. take it to the dealer you bought it from. tell him to fix it or threaten with a lawsuit. but talk to a lawyer first.

Yeah I should take it back and tell him to fix it...

I have another question when I am driving in any gear just cruising and I let even slightly off the gas the car jerks or bucks. I've read online that it could be the TPS but I did a ecu scan and it only came up with P0507 Idle Air Control any reason why that would buck like that?

It also has both abs and brake lights on but I am thinking thats one of the wheel speed sensors.

did you buy it like this?? go get him to fix all of that.

the idle air control valve i think will only affect the idle of the car. i would think it's more towards the tps honestly.

the abs and brake light being on could be a speed sensor, do you have a working speedo? you should def get all that s*** fixed.

Interesting, I have been hearing tapping and rod knock noices on my msp. However i had babied the car and never hit boost or went over 3500rpm's for about 400 miles. I picked up the rod bearings from the dealership and went to work with a mechanic. It is a big job to get to the crank, dont even want to talk about what we had to do. when we pulled the rod caps off and pulled the bearings out they were grooved and scored pretty bad, esspecially on rod #2. HOWEVER, the crank was absolutely untoutched and looked new. (well the whole bottom end looked spanking new after 110,000 miles) but theres oil down there to keep it clean sooo. Plus i run Amsoil which probably saved me from spinning a bearing. SO, it can be done if the crank HAS NOT BEEN DAMAGED OR SCORED IN ANY WAY. If it is and you replace the bearing it will just come back again and damage the crank even more. Good luck and let the dealership know how you feel. And for the brake light, Check your brake fluid and see if it is low, if so that will throw the light.

Definitely take it back.. you don't want to deal with it if someone just traded it in, perhaps knowing that it was about to die.

Yeah I mean I have the day off tommorow I may be calling this goon up.

Now if the crank is scored can you just replace the crank? I'm not driving it back there with this rod knock..although I'm still going to see if he will be willing to fix it..

thank you for your help.

Oh yeah I'm sure it is but lucky my father knows what he's doing...I'll just keep my fingers crossed in hopes the crank is unscathed.(doubt it)
