you will get a low quality header for $250 for our cars sorry to say. there arnt't enough built to make them that cheap. save your pennies and get the awr. it is making solid, consistent hp on our cars and is quality built. just my opinion.

You can also try Essientail Speed thet make 3 types of header for our car, they are s steel and ceramic coated but they are in the $450 region

Just a Little FYI: The AWR header is not street legal, and will not be smog legal. Already checked with a performance shop.;)

FYI there is a Cat directly after the collectors so how would you exspect to put on a race header that eliminates two cats and pass smog? That is why you keep your stock setup and swap them back and forth. It is VERY worth the time. I used to do it on my 1st gen RX-7 all the time. The only other way is to make a shorty manifold before the cat which gains little to nothing except more cracking than the stock cast unit. again just my opinion.

and of course the now famous mazda racing header. you may get alot of complaints on this one but i have it and it works great. it may not be the greastest quality but i like it. looks great, little too loud but overal good mod. $340

Dude i was just stating, it doesn't pass smog. BTW: for some people that's just too much of a hassle, swapping the stock header back and forth for some people. It might be worth the money, and power but not worth having to go through the hassle for some people.

The AWR header (and the non-smog hassle) is well worth it.
Now my car has "the power it should" . . .
. . . for it to be a FUN commuter car ...

See my post:

I have no problem trading a little inconvenience for how much power it gives (and I bet this header will outlive this car)

I think I'll have to put the stock exhaust back on sometime around October of 2008 ! (Cali is 5 years ???)
(and then every two years thereafter)

:D

I have OBX headers. I have't had any problems with them, and you can really feel the difference after you install them. I dont know but, i heard that I am the only one to have them.

yes but on a 4cyl engine it is a header because there is only one "header" in the case of a 6-8-10-12 cylinder engine not inline there is a header on each side of the engine so therefor headers. Not how many pipes there are, how many actual header units there are.

Ractive's is out but not in the US yetm, we hope shortly, it is a 4-1 header.
AWR has a phenominal header of superb quality, and you pay for it, as most things go.
The Racing Mazda header is in the same price range as the AWR and supposedly is of less quality simply because it is a header for a different car "modded" to work on ours.

The OBX header is the same thing, built for an oldef version of the fs-de engine used in the ford probes and requirs some cut/welding to get it to fit right, as does the racing mazda header. For the price though(from 100-150 on ebay) the extra money spent on getting it to fit is worth while.

Essential speeds shorty header doesnt weild much in gains and is hella expensive, I have not seen their full length header so wont comment on it but I hear the quality in most of their stuff is top notch, again though, you pay for it.

Of course if money is not an issue(Iknow it is in this case) a custom header can be made by a very good mechanic, research alot before you choose who to do it.

I am co-running the Ractive header GB. hope to have info on its performance soon.

you will not notice a difference between ANY header. ill bet my paycheck on it.

racingmazda sucks, their company sucks, and the customer service sucks. the header will come up with rust spots (nothing major). the header is not less quality because of the fact that its modded to fit our car - only the bungs are modded, which is no big deal. its just not the best header out there in quality, but same in gains performance wise. see my how-to install thread in the how-to section.

awr is a good quality header but its more expensive and i assure you that you wont notice the single difference. then again you prolly wont get rust spots either.

the ractive group buy has been going on since october 13th, and just like i pointed out, id hold my breath until the headers (plural as in multiple header awd :D ) got here, and now my face is as blue as my car. i guess you get what you pay for. anytime you see a group buy where people are using yawning emoticons due to the fact they have been waiting so long is not a good sign. who the **** wants to wait at least 3 months to get s***? not me.

the only obx header i think in existence is on awdlax car, and it looks exactly like my racing mazda, so dont worry about it and dont try to find it.

and you got travelers shorty jungle looking header, which im not sure if its still available or not, but it keeps the 1st cat.

What about the HP Racing header? Details can be found here: http://www.nopionline.com/ (See attached picture). You have to look under Mazda > Protege > 2001. For some reason it only shows up under the 2001 model year. It's listed at only $240 USD and is ceramic coated. This header is mentioned in the MP3 parts list, however no one ever seems to talk about it specifially.

Also, after many hours of reading on this forum, there never was any follow up on the custom downpipe Wagnermotorsports was producing. I believe this was specifically for turbos -- it had a 2.5" diameter and came with a hi-flow pre-cat. I assume he could make one with a 2.25" diameter pipe and no pre-cat for n/a applications. Has anyone ever just removed the stock pre-cat and downpipe, and replaced it with a custom built piece? I wonder what kind of gain could be made with that? I imagine it would be pretty cheap to fabricate. Everyone seems to say the pre-cat and downpipe are the most restrictive part of the exhaust. Why not just eliminate that and save some $$$?
