Head unit install/modify rear bracket

:
2003 Mazda Protege5
I just received my MSP pocket/support bar from SCMP3 today, so I will be pulling my Alpine out of my Accord and installing it in the Mazda this weekend.

One thing that I noticed was that Crutchfield throws up a note saying that I will have to "unbolt or cut out the factory stereo's rear support bracket to make room for [my] new receiver"

Now, I don't have my stock HU out right now to check the bracket, but is there any way to unbolt the support, or does it have to be cut/pushed it out of the way?

FYI this is what I'm transplanting: Alpine CDA-9883

Slipped in like buttah. Also managed to tap out my Skunk2 knob from my Honda so I can use it on the Protege's flagpole (and now I don't have to use the positioning nut to keep the pattern straight, not like it ever worked in 3 years anyway)

I recently put an alpine head unit in my car with the mount that came free from crutchfield. I much prefer the look of your install - how much did you pay for the pocket / bracket?

40 bucks. I also found out that the 99-00 Proteges with a single-DIN radio have the same pocket, so if you have a pick-a-part or similar around your area, go check it out.

I bought it from another member. It's over $100 if you buy it from the dealer, so your best bet is to check out junkyards or stalk the Marketplace.

Part numbers and install info are in this thread

stuff a lil tiny ball of tissue paper inside the knob.
it'll help serve as a locking nut inside and hopefully keep ur patter straight.
worked on my type R knob for a couple of years until i got the greddy weighted knob

Well I had to retap the thread from M10x1.5 to M10x1.25, so I just tapped it deep enough so that the pattern lined up automatically.
