Has Mazda used a timing chain for a while now?

This was another reason I chose the CX-5 over the RDX & RAV4.

I'm used to this in my Nissan products but remember we had to change the belt in the '96 Protege we had years ago.

This was also a factor in my decision making, as well as the CVT transmissions steered me towards the CX-5 not sure when they implemented. The sales people where I got mine from said it was apart of the skyactiv package that they are pushing to most of their car's now

Interesting.. I wonder at this point if belts are more or less an NVH thing over performance & fuel economy.

EDIT: That being said I don't have any NVH complaints with my CX.

Timing belt problems are replacement cost and dealers. Timing belts are quieter, protect the valve gear against shocks and I've read, use less power. I love the whir of my CX5 timing chain. Ed

My 03 MPV had a timing chain, trouble free for almost 10 years.

When my daughter was looking for a Mazda6 she told a dealer with a 4 cyl for sale that she had test driven a 6 and liked it a lot. He asked the year and model and then recommended against it saying that engine had trouble with sudden timing belt failure. We went back to the v6 car, pulled the oil fill cap, and admired the chain, and bought the car.

I had a 1995 Ford Taurus(purchased at 35,000 miles), but, ran it to over 300,000 miles, with no issues with the original timing chain. A buddy of mine had a timing belt break in a Chevy Impala(I think), left him stranded, at somewhere around 60,000 miles. Since those two, I definitely lean towards timing chains over timing belts.
