gt3076r runing as of 9-28-07

do you drive your car hard? when you slam on the accelerator you're providing a sudden surge of power throughout the engine....... I guess sometimes, it's just too much for the internals of the engine and the connecting rods being as flimsy and crappy as they are snap.

BTW just to let you know...... running the gt3071 "at stock PSI" does not mean you're at stock PSI, the gt3071 is a bigger turbo and flows more volume of air than the stock k04 turbo

so when your stock turbo is 15 psi, we'll say for example you're flowing 650 cfm of air, ok? now when you have the gt3071 at 15 psi, being that it's bigger and allows more airflow....... you would actually be flowing (just an example) 920 cfm.

You understand what I mean? Even though you have the GT3071 at the factory PSI boost setting, you're still making more power than the stock turbo on your engine.

And people have been blowing engines with just the stock turbo on the engine. So maybe you don't drive it so hard?

I was driving the car hard, and 18psi and 20psi spikings are adictive, the faces of STI's and Evo owners were incredible.

But then I read the drivetrains are coming apart, rear diff are trouble and all this engines started to blow. (man this is the car I bought to be different, and not be another STI or EVO owner)

I can't afford a new engine, right now.

So I ordered ATP a 7PSI wastegate and I am running stock 14.5psi, (7psi wastegate combined with factory boost controller).

I know 14 to 15 PSI of a GT3071R is more air flow than the K04, but is a lot less than 18-20 PSI.

NOW I am driving very carefull, not trying to break anything.

Any way more info. is needed, why these motors are blowing, will MAZDA do something about it?

Is this a 2006 problem or also 2007 models are blowing?

Word, that makes a lot of sense. (thumb) not pushing the limits on your car, with the bigger turbo, just being aware of when you are and aren't in boost. a lot of people I believe from the way it's presented to me...... seem to be pushing their car when it blows.

After all we haven't heard of anyone like "omgz I was sitting at teh red lights and my engine blew while idleing" So it's all about how we're pushing the engine, until we get the reinforced internals for it. I for one am looking towards buying the forged engine that PG sells before I buy a bigger turbo, since the turbo I ultimately want is a gt35r ;)

I know about the k04 boosting like right there..... it's instant torque.

BTW I seem to have lost the CarPC thread someone once put up. How'd yours turn out?

LOL...I had a Supra do that...

I've got about 19K on my GT3071R thus far.

I would say that my car is stressed less now than it was with the stocker. I can count the number of times my car actually sees boost throughout the week on one hand.

My K04 used to virtually spool off of idle. This one doesn't spool up that quick, and getting into boost is always a concious thing. It's not like it's laggy, but you have to WANT it to boost.

I've been running about 12PSI on my car for 98% of it's usage with the newer turbo. Except the one time I went to the dyno, and just playing around with it.

I'm probably a bit more tentative about pushing it, until I get another motor, and I'm in no rush for that really.

Once my FMIC gets here, it will be the last thing I do for a hot minute, at the very least until next summer.

And actually getting around to installing my CarPC I've put together.

WORD! i am thinking of upgrading my turbo to keep my exhaust manifold temps down. cuz your 100% right about the idle-spool on this little turbo lol. the other day we were on a drive(me, and two stage2 wrx's, and a sti with CB) up parley's and stopped in Park City. everything pre-turbo was glowing bright red, it was forgable lol. i had to let it idle for about 13 minutes before i felt comfortable turning my car off. the stock k04 is backing up exhaust pressure/heat bad!!

that's why i'm just getting a custom straight through exhaust, downpipe from the turbo all the way back to the exit, no mufflers or cats (alright) thanks the lord for no emissions law in FL eh? :\

BOOST...... that's the same reason I bought the MS6...... to be different. As much as I REALLY like STIs and would eventually likea 2004/2005 model if I get the chance to own one, there are a lot of EVOS and STIs around where I see them. So I wanted an AWD car, and when I read about the MS6 being AWD and turbo charged, just like the EVOs and STIs, I was ecstatic.(naughty)

Mazda most likely isn't going to do a damn thing unless you blow your engine completely stock, with no modifications at all. That would be covered under warranty. Unfortunately once you start putting mods on the car, it's no longer considered covered under warranty and you're on your own.

Which is why before I buy the turbo I would like (the kits are like 3k to 4k i've been looking at, since I'd have to get some custom piping done) I'm just going to buy the forged engine for 5k, and have my buddy's shop drop it in for me. If you wanted an engine you could go all out on without having to get too serious...... your better bet would have been an evo with the 4g63....that engine is pretty stout.

These cars are still new...... and of course, so are the engine. To make money, you need money..... I'm pretty sure they could have built the engines better off the line, with better reinforced rods, etc. But that would have also cost Mazda more money during production, something a lot of companies don't want to do....... lose money. Everyone's out for a profit, that's how you make money. The only thing we can do is learn from those who blow the engine on what NOT to do with these cars.

i have a straight threw exhaust...no cats, and straight thru mufflers. everything after the turbo wasn't glowing at all lol. just the exhaust manifold, and a little bit of the turbo flange was red.

oh and good luck getting the DP made custom(i've heard of ppl doing it,but..)...its a real b**** to get the old one off.. let alone to build one, then have it installed. $$$

That's why it pays to have a hookup.

a full custom setup from my boy is going to cost me just $350.

I know what you mean about the manifold, etc. I've been keeping my eyes out for an aftermarket manifold upgrade, to see if anyone's been working on something for that.

we're installing our demo manifold tomorrow

getting those bolts out should be no problem.. Here's how I look at it. soak em in deep creep heat it up just a little til the deep creep starts smoking shouldn't take too long. Once that is done it is starting to seep in so soak it again let it sit overnight, spray it again in the morning and start working. I have had no problems on my SVO doing it this way. when I put em back in I put anti-sieze on the threads and have taken it off a couple times with no problems. Perhaps this is a trick you all can try. I don't plan to take mine off til I go with a bigger turbo at the end of my warranty. That way if I break something it's my own stupid fault

Awesome, are you going to have a thread posted about it?

Definitely, that and some PB Blaster.... I think the reason people have so much trouble is because of it getting so superheated from being driven around so much, that when the time comes for people to get the downpipe off (after driving the car like 15k miles or something), the bolts and nuts are just heated to each other.

I've been planning to do exactly what you described when I get around to doing the downpipe. (yippy)

actually the bolts were not hard at all for me, the hardest part was getting the stock DP out from behind the motor. even with both motor mounts undone and the alternator off, it was a pain. but i did screw up and forgot to loosen the the DP-side bolts first for the bracket that mounts from the DP to the Block. so that set me back, but it was a pain besides. it was an 8/10 for difficulty in my case..compared to a 4 on a WRX DP.

lol @ a WRX downpipe........ that's nothing....... try an uppipe on the WRX, even more of a pain, because of all the s*** you have to remove.

Friend of mine did it last weekend, installed an uppipe, said it was a b**** and all the damn parts he had to take off, and he had like 2 bolts left over, lol

^done that..twice. its not as bad as my DP was lol. granted i didn't do the uppipe completely by myself, like i did my DP.

why are we comparing apples to oranges DP=UP? nope

nope, just saying. it's not as bad as some people think it is........ plus I have impact tools....... with teh compressz0rz (headbang)

nice, ya i do too. but i didn't use them, it was just a really awquard project i thought. the access points, the bulky stock DP, i don't know. haha it sucked.

but i can't believe that this thread is still going lol! (freak) a little OT hahahahahaahhaa

yup. but keep it on track guys. talk of turbos = ok. talk of supras = not so ok.
