Ok, so I'm looking at having to replace the turbo in my MSP. The thing is, I wanted to go with the stock T25, however, it's going to be on back order until the end of August. I was told, I could just buy the GT28, problem being, I'm not totally familiar with interchanging turbos.

So, here is my question. If I were to upgrade to the GT28, what modifications am I looking at? Do I have to upgrade my intercooler, re-program the ECU and PCM, etc.? I understand the operations or a turbo, but I'm not sure what the specifics are, if I were to put that GT28?

Got some advice for me and maybe a little instalation pointers/help?

Thanks.

After reading, I see that it's mostly just making it fit? So there really isn't a need to put in a larger intercooler and any reprogramming?

If I have to worry about the actuator rod, why would they say it's a OEM stock fit? Unless, they mean just the bolt pattern on the GT28RS "Disco Potato" Turbocharger?

Someone did a product review and said "This is a DIRECT SWAP for Mazdaspeed owners! God, I love it. Be sure to get the .64 trim, as it fits.." Thats from this page : http://siteground207.com/~protegeg/product_reviews.php?cPath=32_181&products_id=844

There is also another one on this page, but no review. Just says you have to buy some adapters. http://siteground207.com/~protegeg/product_info.php?cPath=32_181&products_id=1040

My main concern right now, isn't looking to get more boost, but to replace the turbo and get the car back on the road. I just picked it up a couple weeks ago.

the t28 will cause more turbo lag...you could probably pick-up a used stock t25 in the f/s section. there are several out there. what mods do you currently have?

I have a 28rs and it spools the same if not faster. Its a tight fit and might take alittle time but its worth it. I would recomend putting the stock wga on because the one it comes with will run 10psi at the lowest. Another good thing to do is a full 3inch intake. Your going to have to replace your oil feed and drain lines. Go steel braided if you can. Also make sure you have the right size drain hose i think its like -10 or -8. The turbo should come with a restrictor for the oil feed from -4 to -3. Even with a stock turbo it would be a good idea to upgrade the intercooler or get meth/water injection. You dont have to get a tuner but it would be a good idea to get a split second and a wideband because with it flowing more cfm you might run rich or lean depending on the temp. That should be enough to get you started, correct me if im wrong anyone.

The car is currently stock. The nice thing is, it only has like 48K on it. Pretty good condition.

I checked out the forums already. Not that I don't trust the guys on the forum, but money isn't flowing in right now and I'm not sure I'm willing to buy a used turbo with no guarantee. Apparently, the OEM replacement T25 is "nationally backordered". I've been searching around for the last couple days and it seems that no one has it in stock.

If there is lag on the GT28, then I might as well just wait.

but a used one...send yours to MPNick to upgrade the turbo that's currently on your car...when it comes back, swap it out and sell the used one you had bought.

just my .02...although it would be a PITA.

Buy a genuine CHRA assemly and swap it in. You don't need to replace the housings. Send it to me and I can get it done.

You can either buy the CHRA, witch cost around $700- $800, or get a new one for $1200. Either way the turbo will be like brand new.
