hate to sound dumb, but here goes...i want to be careful and not blow out speakers. what is the highest number in the volume control? i've cranked it up to 22, and that's as far as i dare- i know some people aren't impressed w/the system, but it's ok to me...(headbang)

I want to say 30... Why do that though. Anything above 0 hurts my ears in this car. To say that I'm unimpressed is an understatement. If you guys were to actually see the Bose sub you'd laugh. It's a 5.25" "sub"woofer in a thin plastic waveguide (1/4 wavelength transmission line) enclosure. That thin plastic picks up resonance like crazy. Not to mention, it's smaller than the door drivers. The upper midrange sounds like ass because they didn't put any filters on the midwoofers. They're just relying on the woofer's natural rolloff. What would two small inductors have cost mazda/bose? A dollar? It has the harshest midrange of any stereo I've owned.

One positive, the imaging and stage height are good.

All the factory stuff, except for headunit are out of my GT. Still working on my alternative.

Honestly it depends on the music you are listening to. If you are listening to Spinal Tap cranked to "11", then you are going to be up there in the volume numbers, but lower frequency songs like rap blah blah blah is going to tax the system more.

To those who think BOSE is good enough, and I mean this in a good way...go purchase some decent home theater speakers (hint: they do not all come in a box), and wire them up to a decent home theater amp. Play decent music, and now you know what good sound is. Replicate as close as you can in the car, and NOW you've got what good enough really means.

Bose speakers in my GT suck ass crack... upgrading to aftermarket speakers are on the list...

Loudest I've used system is 18; that's with the Ipod hooked up through the AUX port.

If I wanted to add some inductors to the mids what size/rating do you think that I should add??

Max volume says MAX and its at 33 on the volume control. I've been fiddling with the bose allot lately and heres what I leave it on now. I listen to my music very loud and never use the ALC.

Bass: -2
Treble: +4
Fader: Faded to Rear +2
Balance: Faded t0 Left +1

The sytem is a weird system, no doubt about it. I think the front and reawr speakers are the same size but feel the bass out of the fronts compared to the rears with some bassy music sometimes. The Fronts are pounding, while the rears are barely playing any Bass.

With the Bass turned down on mine so much, anyone know if there is a gain or anything on the factory bose Sub as I think it could use a little more volume.

I listen with the Volume set to 25 with that setup all the time, sometimes even 30. Before all you guys yell at me, realize the ALC makes a huge difference in volume and I never use it, adds distortion if you ask me, plus i control the volume, not my car.

Have absolutely no idea. Picking a crossover point is dependent on so many variables. Driver impedances, T/S parameters, tweeter filtering, etc. Bose should have done it though and they chose not too, all to save a "buck".

I don't know how you can listen to the treble setting at +4. Ouch.

I ran with my setup at like Bass -3 and Treble -4. Fade was a couple clicks forward.

The speakers in the back are not running full-range. There is some filtering. The midbass in the front sounds quite good if you deaden the front doors (aka dynamat). I couldn't believe the difference. You have to run the bass in the negative range in this car or it sound like wet farts.

Also, don't bother messing with the Bose sub. It's a piece of poo. Yes, it reinforces the door speakers, but it can't reproduce below about 60Hz. There are bass passages in my CDs that are completely absent on the Bose system. There is about 1 octave of music completely missing. :)

I would invest in some inexpensive aftermarket equipment if you want a true and adjustable subwoofer.

I would turn the treble up to drown out some of the too rich mid tones. I also have a love affair for clear high music.
