Goofy air box inlet

get rid of that box. you can get a cone style filter and it will attach to the stock hose. it allows alot more air in that the silencer and the stock filter. you can tell the diferance. i would not worry about getting water that high if you do you got other problems. and if you dont think there is a dference just put the old stuff back takes about 5 minutes.
i understand that but im trying to figure out if i want to buy a cone filter and do that or just buy the drop in panel filter. if the airbox does provide some amount of torque, id rather just leave all of that OEM and buy the drop in filter.

I tried the K&N cone on my P5, and it didn't "feel" any different than the K&N Panel and Silencer removed like I am running now. It was actually quieter... for some strange reason.

I was more interested in the amount of air the silencer was letting into the motor than I was the amount of cool air I was bringing in. My horribly non-scientific method of touching the airbox after driving, has shown that the airbox is cooler without the silencer in place. Sort of backwards from what I thought it would be... It seems the Silencer sitting right on top of the radiator, holds a whole lot of heat, or at least gets hotter than the ambient temp in the engine bay... Oh well, it smoothed out the engine enough to notice in the 4,500 RPM range, well, that and the plug wires probably helped some too...

Would removing the grill inlet thing and the silencer work for my 1.6l?

It should... I removed the silencer on my 1990 LX with a 1.8L and a K&N panel, and had similar results... It seems like I got 2 or 3 MPG better out of the 1.8 too, it needed more air badly... :)

I did something similar except I used a stock replacement air intake hose from Advance Auto. It was a universal replacement part, I just found the one that was closest to the diameter of the opening in the bottom of the airbox. It was the perfect size and length to route to the hole in the driv. fender well where most CAI go through. Didn't have to move or modify anything. Its a heavy black plastic with a steel wire spiraled inside it. Fairly flexible stuff and works great. Noticeable diff. and not much louder than stock. For less than a $10 investment and no other parts it's worth a shot. I'll try to get pics sometime.

I ran my dryer ducting through the drivers side fender hole all the way up to the front of the car and ended it in the lower grill opening. You don't get any colder air than that. Yes I agree that metal hose probably does conduct heat a little more than plastic, but I think the thickness of the dryer hose counter acts that because of the amount of cold air it lets in compared to the stock piping. The only place the hose sees any real amount of heat is when it reaches the stock filter box. So I don't see how the stock restrictive piping is better than the dryer hose. Check out where the air inlet is on the stock piping. Once you close the hood ther's really no where for the air to enter efficiently. Thus is my conclusion.

seriously to say power gain is very minimal anywayz... +/- wise... intake is so to smooth out your driving...

i got a ractive intake about a week ago... i found that the air flow is not that great... no where to direct it straight to the cone... and i felt it hard on the engine as it kept on suckin air instead of havin air hit into the filter... so i also got that dryer ducting, and just lead air straight into the filter... now it feels smoother...

p.s. for this price... as long as it works... i got no prob.... if it costs me an arm and a leg, and didnt work the way it should.. then i'll start bitching... hahaha

I'm customizing the top part of the stock airbox to cover the K&N cone.

Darin is right you loose torque with all of these... it mail feel faster but try going up hill hehe you'll see the difference

Hmmm - decisions, decisions.

I don't suppose there's any P5 owners trying the stock airbox mods that have had access to dyno testing and got before & after runs?

o.g.skater, you make my yellow P5 look dull!!! That is one crazy engine bay...what did you use? I love it!!! Can you give me some sizes so I know what to look for?
