Hey, im lookin for a good radar detector but i dont really know much abot them. Can anyone tell me of a few that are good and wont break the bank. also, i would like to put it on the left side of me, any that are battary powered?

I've used Beltronics for a long time. Each has paid for itself pretty quickly. EBay often has some good buys. There's an RX-65 in my Mazda and in the Ram. The 300C has a sti (?) 65 (not quite the same, but close). Mine are all mounted above the rear view mirror. Easy to run the wiring up the A-pillar on the Ram. Using the power to the mirror on the other two. Make sure you fuse 'em.

I use a Valentine 1 mounted right in the middle of my goddam windshield. It might not be the most stealthy thing ever, but works great for me, and has paid for itself probably like 8 times.

Nice, ill check those out, thanks for the quick responses!! I just almost blew by a cop and surely would have gotten an 2x the speed limit ticket but he dident see me. so i figured it was time lol.

I've always heard great things about the Valentine 1, however I have an Escort 8500 that has served me very well for a very long time.

Another question, will a radar detector jsut tell me when there is a lazer around or will it tell me when there is a cop around period?

I'm a great fan of the escort 9500i. Says basically nothing until it really means it. Your brain tends to filter out the alarm if there are too many falses. In fact, mine is getting an upgrade right now, to 9500xi spec, I expect it will be even better. I've been tiptoeing around for the last week or so while it's gone.

The $399 Valentine One is the best at detecting radar and laser in the under $500 radar detector category.

Avoid all battery operated detectors because they are sleeping 85% of the time to conserve batteries which makes them weak.

Why battery operated detectors suck:

These devices are radar and laser detectors not cop detectors. Think of radar and laser as headlights and a radio on a cop's car, they aren't always on but they can be turned on in an instant and you can't do anything about it.

Go to these sites to read up on everything you could ever want to know about countermeasures for your car.

Your best bet is:

Laser Jammer to jam their laser guns.
Radar Detector to catch their radar waves ahead, might give you a couple of secs worth of slowing down.
Trunk scanner with GPS, you will hear if theres a cop 2 miles around you (ahead,or behind) and if theres a speed trap.

Thats the best you can do...

There are really only a couple out there that are worth having.

They've already been mentioned here (Escort's high-end models and the V1).

I'm a staunch advocate of the Valentine One. I've been using one for years now (I'm on my second unit, as the first was stolen out of my Focus) and it's never let me down. I bought one for my fiancee this past Christmas and she loves hers as well.

Good luck with the decision.

Oh, you are from Cali. Laser Jammers are elligal here. No matter what radar dedector you get it's no good against a laser gun. Cant beat the speed of light. The time it takes a radar detector detect a laser gun it's to late cops already got you. It's a losing battle for us Californians against lasers. Same apply for Virginia and D.C. I think.

Who cares if laser jammers are illegal in California because the chance of getting caught with one are slim and the fines are smaller than the cost of a laser ticket and your insurance rates going up.

In California, Laser Jammers are illegal.

Truer words were never spoken. You have to pay attention. I got nailed three nights ago on a strange stretch of highway. A friend swears she can make it go away, but we'll see.
The cops had a decoy with radar on in the median to catch your attention, then at the next overpass they had a spotter using instant on laser sitting on the far side of the overpass where you can't see him unless you were looking up way far back. They had a fleet of pursuit cars sitting up the ramp out of sight. Last day of the month, they pulled out all the stops for that fund raiser.

a radar detector is a tool. If you do not understand what it does, how it does it and what other factors are in play, it will be VERY good at informing you that you have recieved a ticket about 10 seconds before the lights come on
