Good price for 2006 MPS 6?

I have FINALLY made my decision that the Mazdaspeed 6 is the next car I want to purchase. Over the last 2 years I've looked at everything from Murano, A-4, FX-35, STI, G-35x, Legacy GT and the MPS6. I have finally decided that the MPS is the perfect combination of speed, style, luxury, insurance costs and practicality with the AWD.

Anyways... enough of my babbling.

So I found a gray Grand Touring 2006 MPS6 with 22,000 miles. It is a 1 owner car with a completely clear carfax history at a local Mazda dealership in NY. From what I can tell, it has every option except navigation. The car is basically in brand new condition. I took it for a test drive last week and mechanically everything is perfect.

They are asking $20,995, but I am sure I can get them down a little.

From what I've been reading online, some of these cars sold for significantly less than MSRP because of Mazda's poor marketing at the time. Apparently some people were able to get their hands on one for as little as $22-$24?

If this is the case, almost $21 seems too high? KBB shows $25 for retail, and $20-22 for private party depending on condition.

If I can get into it for $20, does that seem like a good buy?

Any help is greatly appreciated...

People (like me) got them cheap because they were sitting at the dealership not moving. Now... they are not. They're all gone, and their limited run seems to have helped it hold its value, you can't just find one anywhere! I think 20K is perfectly reasonable. Plus most of the cheaper ones were usually Sport models, not GT (well... at least in the case of myself and people I know).

Thats my opinion anyways.

I just got mine about three weeks ago. 2006 black touring model, pretty good shape, with new tires and 28k. they wanted 21,500. ended up getting it for 19,500. I thought it was fair and i'm absolutely in love with it.

Thanks for the quick replies. I am surprised to see they moved that much on a used vehicle from a dealer. But I have never purchased a used vehicle from a dealer. I've either bought from individuals or new from a dealer. What did you offer? I was thinking of offering $19, but perhaps I should go more along the lines of $18...

So I went back to the dealer last Thursday and sat down with the salesman to see how far they were willing to move. I told him that I wasn't interested in talking about my trade-in at this point yet, because that I wanted to discuss the price of the speed 6 first. I told him I know its been on the lot for at least 2 months and that I know they didn't sell too well when they first came out.

I mentioned that I've spoken with some people who were able to get them far below MSRP, some as much as $7500 off. He told me that that certainly wasn't the case around Buffalo NY. In looking at the carfax for it, I can see if was shipped to the dealer in April 06 and sold 2 months later. I am guessing that in those 2 months, it may have dropped somewhat, but not as drastically as $7500 off MSRP.

Anyways, he basically told me that they are selling it for $20,995 because that is what they have into it. He told me that it has been on the lot for some time now and that they just recently dropped the price $2000 because it had been listed at $22,900. I have to think they'd be willing to move about $1000 on a used car that doesn't have much interest.. but perhaps not?

There are 2 others listed locally, one at a different dealer for $23,000 and one through an individual for $22,000. They are all 2006's with around 20,000 miles. I told him I was going to look at the other ones and that I would get back with him in a few days. Its been a week now and I figured they would have called me to try to work something out... but they haven't.

I've never bought a used car from a dealer before, they've always been from private party. Should I bother calling him back or continue to play the waiting game? The car has a completely clean carfax. It was sold at this dealership and was serviced there every 3 months. I wish I could look up the original selling price back in June 2006 or the trade in price they paid for it to see what they are trying to bring in as a profit...

I'd say 20K is a fair price to pay. Don't let the dealer fool you, since you can find more info here than they'll tell you. The local dealer to me sat one them for months brand new, so I'd imagine the used ones will sit a bit longer. You're doing the right thing, maybe even talk to the used car sales manager and see if he'll budge instead of his boy.

I got mine out of state. sometimes if you know what you want, just go get It! If the warranty is still good, you have very little risk. The dealership out here in Stamford just replaced a $2700.00 seat frame for me because i told them the seat squeeked! (NO BS!!!) Just check within 100 mi on auto trader and......... bring her home!!!!
Good Luck!

one of the key things to why some of us got such amazing deals is because mazda was offering like a $4000 rebate.
