Nice article... but one mistake... or at least so I've been told... the car was NOT named for the kenwood MP3 player in it... it was name MP3 for Mazda Protege 3rd generation...

Where did you hear that?

Every article I have seen about the car says that Mazda named it the MP3 because this was the first car with an MP3 player installed from the factory.

The third gen Protege started a few years before the MP#, ever hit the showroom.

I had been corrected by other members who have been around longer... as I thought it was the MP3 player that was the reason for the name as well... but apparently not or something... So it was just what I was corrected to. Could still be wrong I guess... but both make sense... so it doesn't matter in the end I guess???

Not really, I was just trying to figure out where you had heard that...

Even Mazda's press server says MP3 for the player. I have never heard the third gen Protege comment.

Well that'd be interesting... I'd like to know for sure which is the actual... I had thought it was for the player... and then told it was for 3rd gen... and you are saying that mazda said for the player.. LOL... oh well. It's a cool mazda... that's all that matters ;)

It was my understanding that the MP3 was supposed to be the launch car for Mazdaspeed in the US. However, becuase of the lack of power in the total overall performance of the vehicle, it was dubbed "MP3" for the player.

Mazdaspeed US then went back to the drawing board and had a turbo car in development as the MP3 and Protege 5 came to market in 2001 as 2001 and 2002 vehicles respectively.

And the turbo car finally came out as a 2003 model as the Mazdaspeed Protege.

Just to jump in and say "Hi, Chris" and agree. The MP3 was named because that because it was the first production car with a deck capable of playing MP3 files (on a CD-R). All the press reports and magazine stories said the same thing. I had also heard the story about Mazda not wanting to release the car as a "Mazdaspeed" version due to the lack of HP -- both Grassroots Motorsports and Road & Track both mentioned it.
