Going over 80Mph for the first time - 2014 CX-5 AWD

2014 Touring FWD here. No issues going over 80MPH.
Heck the 2.5L is nice. Sometimes I'm going 60MPH then having to pass someone, suddenly I'm going 80MPH in a matter of seconds.
The CX-5 is rev limited/speed limited to 120MPH I believe. If you read some reviews online they say what the limit is.

Also, if you have a 2014 (or a very late 2013), there is a kick-down switch on the accel. pedal. To make it drop a few more gears down and go Zoom-Zoom, push the pedal down then push again and you can feel it click down. There's multiple threads on this.

I grew up in Germany so 80 mph is not a big deal. I actually can't stand going 60 on the motorway. And yes like CS-V said here in Texas there are speed limits posted as 75+. It's more about lane discipline that raw speed eg the passing lane is used for passing and not thoroughfare (as it commonly is). There are also signs like "Don't slow Texas down" in the passing lanes everywhere, and left lane for passing only signs. Anyhow I find my self going 80-85 often as I do a lot of highway miles (I'll be about 18-19k by august marking 1 year of ownership). I can maintain that speed easily, but I spend most of my miles on US 281 and it's full of hills and curves so there is a lot of downshifting (but damn that's a fun drive).

Indicated (speedo reading) 80mph speed is normal in California on multilane freeways in good weather.

Note: Highest posted speed limit is 70 mph in CA.

What does that mean exactly? The signs actually say "75+"?

Anyway, if the speed limit is posted as 75, then 80 is obviously not a big deal at all for those conditions. Here in New England, 65 is the standard and some highways are still 55.

Had to pass a car this weekend on a trip to the mother inlaws....floored it and the engine just roared. The sound it made was incredible just like a race car....loved it so I remember telling my wife....listen how awesome this engine sounds...of course she just rolled her eyes. Passed the car with no problems at all.....love this car...love the power.

I think the question here is (what is the cx5 governed speed limit). It will be governed by the ecm. My 2007 Mazda 3 was governed at 188 kph. Once there the engine rpm jumped around like a rev limiter. I only needed to do it once and I would not attempt in my cx5. Lol. I would rather just read about it. One thing is a no brainer. This car on its best day would not outrun a cruiser on its worst day.

Don't think the question of CX-5 top speed being governed is the question here. I think top speed is be drag-limited (as mentioned in Car and Driver magazine latest road test of 2.5L CX-5). Most likely the 2.0L is also drag-limited too (although the Car and Driver July 2012 article said "red-line limited" at 115mph, which probably means they used 4th gear at redline to achieve that speed, not 6th gear which would result in a lower top speed, as seen on speed in gear data provided by them).

Still, I
Here in Ontario, doing 50 kph over any speed limit is an automatic road side siezure of the vehicle. Impounded for 2weeks at your expense, and a 2 g fine. Judged, juries and exicuted. Find your own way home. Not to mention insurance cancellation. Do it again and lic suspension an 10 g fine.

All of our hwys are 100 kph.

Sounds like the good old days of 55 mph speed limit in US, except the inconsistent enforcement made it a joke. Don't miss that lame limit.

I noted the top speed specs to show that top speed was drag-limited and rev-limited, not electronically governed.

They call going 50+ km over the limit "Stunting" here in Nova Scotia. They catch people doing it all the time and its 2400$ , impounded vehicle and loss of license. Some of our divided highways are 110km/hr. I don't think I've had the cx5 over 130 and that was briefly to pass some cars. I find that it's a fun car to drive but also relaxing to drive which means I tend to drive slower with this car than the 06 Forester I had.

It's very relaxing when going fast or very fast. Bit of an anticlimax really.

In Switzerland, if you caught over a certain speed, lets say 200, then the fine is a fixed percentage of your monthly or yearly I come. I'm sure if you google around you will see some stories of super car drivers getting fines of quarter a million!

I agree. It's very composed at higher speeds and doesn't get that "floaty" feeling so many cars with soft suspensions and flexy frames can get at 80 mph and above. In another life I had a 442 with mild street cams and HD transmission. Even with its aftermarket shocks it was a scary handful to manage at higher speeds. The cx-s on the other hand loves to rail the corners at speed. Sure, it's no sport coupe due to its higher center of gravity but it does get a nice carving feeling which it maintains even at higher speeds.
