Some small planes today actually use mazda rotary(wankel) engines. However, when someone talks about an old rotary prop plane, they are usually not talking about a wankel engine.

This engine uses regular old pistons, but they are arranged around a circle and so it is also called a rotary engine, although the working are completely different from a wankel rotary.
This concludes the rotary lesson for the day.

Here is a reference that tells you how the rotary piston engine worked. Unlike today's radial engine, the crankshaft was fixed to the airframe. This meant that the cylinders rotated around the crank.
