GI: Cometic Head Gasket for 2.0 FS-DE (turbo etc.)

definitely interested in taking one off beaus hands.
That's fine if you would like to buy one from Beau, just make sure you let him know so he can possibly up the quantity he has ordered with me and get all of us closer to the 100 we need.

As for the thickness, it will be very close to stock (just slightly thicker), not intended to be used for lowering compression ratio. That is usually much better accomplished with piston design.

Thanks,
Tom

good news on the thickness :D I already lowered my compression to 8.5to1 and I don't want it to go lower. :)

Cometic is very good. That is what I use in all motors when available. Here is my 645 WHP K20 engine during the build.

hmmm... perhaps Juan might be interested in picking up a few gaskets as well to help us meet the minimum req. for inclusion with his new MSP kits and regular HiBoost kits for the guys going forged?

MP3racer Am I correct in assuming this gasket will fit the 03 2.0 Protege5? If so, put me down for 2 (in case I have to pull my head off - am building a second engine specifically for turbo charging). It'll be 2-3 months before I'm ready for gaskets anyway, still waiting on SS valves, valve springs and forged pistons before any machine work can be done.

Yes, the gasket should fit the P5 '01-'03 since they too have the 2.0 FS-DE motor. It may take 2 months for the production since Cometic is currently stacked with NASCAR orders......

As far as the other parts you mention (SS valves, Valve springs, forged pistons) we should have those available in short order as we are coming out with our "engine kit". Just awaiting a better price on the SS valves. Everything else is ready!!!

Thanks,
Tom

Thanks, but already have ordered and paid for those through a local performance shop....just waiting on delivery.

So far, I am happy with the performance of the stock head gasket. It has shown very reliable all the way to 330+ WHP. If they become available I, would buy them.

Just wondering....whose valves and valve springs are you using?

Thanks,
Tom

hey Juan are you using ARP head studs with the stock head gasket? I need a new gasket and am wondering if I should go with the stock one just clamped down tighter with the ARPs or get a copper one.

Don't get a copper gasket, unless you want to o-ring your block too. Like Juan said, the stock gasket performs very well and from what I have read, is actually going to be a better solution until this cometic gasket comes out for turbocharging. I just know I have seen a couple of blown factory gaskets now in higher boost applications and I want to be ready when my OEM one gives up.

Next time my head is off I'll probably be doing valves and springs as well.

And as far as the head studs go, you can go with ARP or stock. AWR and Mental Addiction both have ARP kits avaialble now. Make sure you get he 11mm studs and not the 10mm as was previously posted on the forums. the 10mm are too small.

Right. And so far I am happy with my OEM gasket that you installed. Thanks again btw.
But I have seen a couple of head gaskets go in higher boost applications and I know that Rishie's failed as well. So why not replace it with something better when the time comes around right?

I am now convinced that OEM is better than Rubber for FI though.

I still think that the OEM gasket is one hell of a gasket. Hasn't failed on me yet.

keep in mind the failures may be detonation linked as well... a little detonation will go a long way to screwing with a gasket due to the higher pressures.

Bump Bump. What's the word? Did it fall through due to the excessive minimum order? Cause I'm still interested in buying 2. One for immediate use and one for backup.

Eibach valve springs and don't know what valves. The machine shop said that since none are made specifically for this engine they'll fine some for another app that matches the specs for my valves.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought some of you would like to know that I have in my possession a Cometic Gasket made for my 03 MSP 2.0L Protege engine. I had them use the thickest size they would do for our engine. The thickest size is 0.074" which will take my current 9.1:1 C/R and bring it down to exactly 8.49:1....

The cost was $116.45+$7.78 S/H = $124.23

I talked to Kevin Kistner at 1-800-752-9850x120 I do believe Kevin even races our engines, either way he was very knowledgable about our engines and loved them... I see two seperate stock codes:

C5845-074 & H2265074S

Description on the invoice is MAZ FS-DE 2.0L 84.5MM & .074" MLS HEAD GASKET

below is a link to a compression calculator and some numbers to punch in for the FS-DE 2.0L engine to decide which size you may want. In addition, you will find more detailed information about the gaskets they sell for our cars. (I got the link and info from an older thread)

http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/compstaticcalc.html

3.27 Bore
3.62 Stroke
.04 Head gasket (use what ever size you wish to buy)
.06 Deck height
4 cc piston top volume
44 cc combustion chamber

Gasket Materials: MLS (Multi Layer Steel)

The Cometic MLS gasket is comprised of three layers of Stainless Steel. Cometic uses Stainless steel for increased strength, its ability to rebound and corrosion resistance. The outer layers of the gasket are embossed and coated on both sides with a flouroelastomer rubber based material (Viton) designed to meet the demands of a variety of harsh sealing environments, load conditions and surface finishes. The Viton coating is heat resistant to 250
0C or 4820F. The center or shim layer of the gasket is comprised of an uncoated Stainless Steel layer, which can be varied to accommodate multiple thickness requirements. The MLS gasket is ideal for both aluminum heads to cast iron blocks and aluminum heads to aluminum blocks. The composition of MLS will also withstand the shearing forces created by aluminum heads on cast iron blocks. No re-torque is necessary. By design the MLS gasket promotes an even torque load across the sealing surface allowing for measurable reduced bore distortion.

Available thickness:
.027", .030", .036", .040", .045", .051", .060", .065", .071", .074", .120"

(I placed the order on the 17th and it was shipped the 24th and I received it via UPS on the 28th)

Cool! If I ever take out my stock head gasket I may have to pick one of these up... but so far so good :)
