GI : Big Brake Upgrade

Hey Matty, hopefully the BBU will come soon enough, when I get the chance I'll see if I can chase up the new machinest next week. No word back on our prototype CAD model as yet. The walls have ears at work, so I ring up when I can, you know how it is. I've been waiting almost 4 weeks for my adjustable cam gears to be made, I'm new to this machinary stuff, things move pretty slow, but I guess that's just how it is?

Machine shops everywhere (the states too) are always backed up... its part of what defines a machine shop.. good luck having them made in a timely manner.. that rotor seems pretty great. I'd love to have a 2 piece high quality rotor for the custom kit I'm making for myself, but I'd have to make custom hats too... = time

Hi Steve,

Twilight and I both busy at the moment, I've got a car and a dune buggy that are both in need of parts and repairs, I was hoping to have these things sorted out by now so that we could move on with the brake kit.
It's not a lost cause, it's just been a pretty bad time for both of us for different reasons in the last few months. Hopefully we can have this and other things on the move before the end of the year.

Thanks for your patience guys, it'll be great when we can go public with the brake kit so you guys have some more options.

Ok, understandable. I know how snags come up and projects have to be pushed aside for the moment. Sorry to hear about all the things that have happened to you and Andrew. Hope they all work themselves out. If and when you get this started again, keep us all updated. Just for rememberance sake, this is going to be for the 4 lug Protege sedans as well, right? What size wheel is this going to work behind? I have 18x7.5s. Is that going to be a problem?

Hey Steve,

The 11.5" big brake kit as the prototype sits on twilight's car, will just fit inside the stock Mazda 16" wheels (great for you guys that run winter tyres on 16s). Due to their slim wheel design they will also fit in Ray's Engineering TE37 15" racing wheels aswell! We plan on doing a 4 lug pattern too, and these will be test fitted on my car to ensure they have no clearance issues. So there are a few issues to sort out first to make sure they suit everyone, but the hardest thing is getting companies to do the work in a reasonable time, which you would think is easy at first, but...

Cheers,
Gav.

Well, take your time and get all these issues sorted out. I have no problem waiting (not like I have any other choice), so do what you can. I see a lot of BBK's for 5 lugs (and 4 now) but they all won't work for me because I have the bigger wheels. This might be a stupid question, which Im sure it will be, but how big of a difference does it make if you have a size 14 or 15 inch wheel as opposed to a 17 or 18 inch one? Is fitment THAT much different between the two? Basically, what would keep a BBK meant for a 4 lug, 16 inch wheel from working on a 4 lug, 18 inch wheel?

Ahhh, it won't matter if you have 4 or 5 lug pattern, so long as the wheel is 16"+ it should be fine, but some 15" racing wheels are designed rather slim inside the hub space, so they will still fit.
Now as for 18" wheels, the only thing that would stop them from fitting is a high +ve offset like 50+ or so. But these are some of the issues we need to sort out so that the BBU upgrade suits the majority. Generally +42/45 is the optimum offset for most Protegs, but we're concious of the fact some people might run +48/50...

Good to hear that this kit may be available to me. My wheels have a 42 or 45 mm offset so things should be alright. I know this might be a little too early to ask, but do we have a general idea what this may cost? Just curious.

I can say that +42/45 will be fine as it's in the best size range and is most popular. Hopefully Andrew (Twilightprotege) will pipe up, as he has a better idea of pricing, I'm just the CAD monkey for the machining.

Any good news for me? Well all us other members in general..... but me personally?

Hows the project coming along? Any further ahead then where you were before? Any guesstimates as far as price yet? Just curious, thats all.
