GHL vs. Perrin

Inbetween the 2 different exhausts, which one would actually be the better buy? GHL offers a true turbo back approach for roughly$1200, and Perrin offers a s-pipe back for $900. Is the S-pipe really that much of a horsepower adder. Please a little input anyone. Also if anyone can direct meto the sound clips of both, and horsepower #'s. thanks

Just to clarify, Perrin's exhaust (& any other "turbo-back" exhaust with the exception of iON) is just J-pipe back...GHL & iON are the only 2 companies that have made aftermarket downpipes (S-pipe & J-pipe together = actual downpipe).

I don't know if Perrin has dyno #s for any of their parts (if they do, I haven't seen them), so finding those would require someone who owns them to do the dyno themselves. Our downpipe IS restrictive & getting a complete turbo-back exhaust over just a J-pipe back would be a good thing. On a turbocharged car, no exhaust is the best exhaust, so eliminating any restriction will always result in power gains & faster spooling of the turbo. I haven't talked to anyone who has the full GHL exhaust installed, so I can't speak for the quality, but I do know a few people with the Perrin who like it. Personally, I have a custom J-pipe back exhaust because I couldn't justify paying so much $$ for something I could get for 1/4 the price.

Thanx black majik, any new knowledge to me for this car is a good thing, thats why I look to other members for the answer. The s-pipe is the piece that bolts directly to the turbo (correct), so in your opinion what kind of gains should someone expect from the s-pipe. I personally can't see spending an extra $300 for a piece that may only = 3-4 hp. I've also been seeing that ghl sounds similar to stock, with the exception of a tad louder, and deeper, and perrin sounds deeper, with a more aggresive tone. Input please.

if you order the ghl with no resonator or cat it iwll be loud and agressive and have much more hp gains

Is there any price difference w/or w/o the cat and resinator? Also what exactly does yours sound like, and whats your opinion on the performance gains.

GHL,iON>Perrin

They around same price, iON a little more, but Perrin has no true S-Pipe and has no Cats which isn't going to help us who live in NJ or Cali or someplace with strict emission standards.

I by no means discredit Perrins work though, their exhaust looks and sounds great too.

ITs not the gains from the "S" pipe. Its more that our stock s-pipe small in diameter and retards flow. so the GHL offers a replacement which allows more flow thus lesss back pressure. I believe that is the case...but i am no expert~

Correct, Its not just how much HP the S pipe adds, its doing everything you can to eliminate that restriction, for starters its MUCH smoother than stock S/J pipe, its larger and it seperates the wastegate / turbine flow, so that when the wastegate opens it doesnt create turbulence. Its not necessasary to replace the s pipe but for 300.00 its worth it to me. I can send you pics of the GHL setup as its what im installing now (working on a writeup) it is REAL nice quality (as perrin and ion im sure). In the GHL thread theres a pic i put of the stock S pipe and the GHL so you can see the differences.

I would appreciate it terbow. Now I'm starting to understand how this all workswith the s& j pipe. Also, if when your done with the install, if you could shoot me a sound clip I'd be thankful. Also did you get the trbo back w/or w/o the cat and resonator? Thanks

Freeing restrictions will have greater and greater gains as you raise the boost also, if you are planning to do that.

I got it with cat and resonator. I like it quiet as i can and for my goals there will be plenty of flow. Its comeing along well, if i had a garage id be done but it keeps raining, and i have to take pics and write down so its going slow but its going, the install is alot easier (but longer) taking the mani and turbo out. I cant do it the other way, it was too difficult for me. But the writeup its comeing along good. edaddee if you go to www.rendershack.com/ghl/ theres pics i put up a while back. So you can at least see what it consists of.

Thanks alot! On the ghl website you can't see the full amount of quality that this product has. Very nice looking product along with looking tough. I think you as well as the other members input helped me to realize that the s-pipe is a very needed part. Thanks for all your help, and keep me informed of the progress.

another option would be to buy the downpipe and exhaust seperately from www.apexr1.com it's about $930 in 3" or $850 in 2.5" just thought I'd throw that one out there. I have the apex downpipe with a custom catback, I couldn't see spending $550 for something I paid $300 for

isn't the GHL downpipe different from the apex one? if i'm not mistaken i remember reading that the GHL downpipe replaces the s and j pipe where as the apex one is really just a midpipe. correct me if i'm wrong about anything i was too lazy to go back and reread to be sure.

Just to be absolutely clear, the Apex pipe replaces the J-pipe and the midpipe, the latter being the straight pipe containing the two catalytic converters.

I have found that the addition of just the Apex J-pipe/midpipe adds a nontrivial "kick in the pants" to the car's pull, especially at the top end, and at the same time opens up and deepens the exhaust note nicely, all without being too much louder than stock. I highly recommend this modification.

The Perrin exhaust is mean sounding (believe me!) I've hear the sound of the GHL and the Perrin is deeper. I am going to get the GHL S-pipe and have a flange welded on that mates up with the Perrin. That will be a good exhaust! My mid-pipe is at Perrin right now getting a flex-pipe of sorts and an extra o2 bung.
