Getting 30k service done this afternoon...

Cost:$515(Bay Area, CA)

After reviewing sheet they had and doublechecking with the tech, they pretty much replace all fluids which is what I wanted. I was doubtful that they did but sheet said they replace and not just top off.

Oil
Transmission
Brake
Coolant

along with the following:

Power steering fluid(top off only)
Cabin and engine air filter
Tighten all bolts
Lube hinges etc
Rotate tires
Check suspension
Check brakes
Idle etc

Spark plug replacement only done at 75k so not necessary at 30k and 60k service they said. Similar pricing elsewhere? I used to DYI but no longer have time to do any of that plus I read somewhere on here that some of these are required to honor some warranties down the line. Btw I got a 2010 3 sedan as a loaner, not bad for daily driver.

i know i know lol. are there other options other than doing it yourself to save $? would you trust non dealer mechanic to work on your car? also read in some other 30k service thread that some warranties not honored if some of these services aren't done. this car is my daily to work and daycare and need it running for a long time.

Which dealership? I'll be getting 30k done hopefully before warranty is toast.

im doing 15k very soon.
can i tell them to not change the oil and will that decrease the price? i want to use M1 5w30 and they dont carry it. or can i bring my oil and tell them to use it? will it be cheaper?

yes, just tell them want you want done out of the list, just come to a price you both agree on first.

tech called and said have to keep the car till tomorrow as they found small leak in oil pan gasket near front of car. gaskets getting replaced under warranty. i noticed it when i changed my oil last but thought it was nothing, apparently it was significant enough for them to fix it under warranty.

It can be cheaper if you just get the part of the service where they replace fluids and filters. They add the tighten bolts, lube hinges and check suspension to make it seem like its worth the price but there isn't any bolts to "tighten", they don't come loose. They will also usually check the car over for free, since they will get more work if they find something. So if you really want to be a pain in their ass just for kicks, check the door hinges after the service while you pick it up. There won't be any white lube on them because that part of the service is just to make the the service look beefy. (this will most likely get the tech in trouble though even though its management's fault)

Anyway, if you don't want to spend the big bucks, try to find a GOOD independent shop. As long as you get proof that you had the service done by any shop, it covers the warranty. Its against the manapoly law for any car company to make you go to the dealer. But it is nice when the dealer does happen to find something wrong since only they can make warrant repairs.

(sounds like you got a decent dealer though, I would have sprayed the oil pan with brake clean and said "what leak?" )

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but is the 15K service worth it? They want to charge me like 240 bucks for an oil change, tire rotation, replace filters, clean the brakes, do a full inspection, blah blah.

I have an appointment tomorrow but I'm thinking to just change it to an oil change and have another shop inspect the car to do any other serivces. What do you guys think? Anyone have the 15K service done from the dealer?

So for folks that only have access to dealer for service and don't have time to DIY, here's the breakdown of what they did:

Oil
Oil filter
Oil conditioner
Fuel injector cleaner
Winshield washer solvent
Windshield wipers
Cabin air filter
Engine air filter
Replenish fluids
Lube
Rotate tires
Check tires
Check brakes
Inspect suspension
Inspect drive axle, joints, etc
Inspect exhausts
Inspect drive belts, etc
Inspect lights, heating, ac, etc
Clean battery
Load test battery
Replace brake fluid and bleed
Transmission fluid change
Coolant service system
Pressure test coolant system
Alignment check

Problems foudn during maintenance:

Oil pan leaking by transmission, timing cover seal leaking by water pump and alternator side. Fixed under warranty.

Of course there are other options. Get on MOCCFORUMS.COM and see who is recommended on that forum. We all look out for each other and a lot of the techs are out of work. Maybe you can find someone that is willing to do your service for around half the price of the dealer. Maybe a little more but still.

This is what you got

Oil
Oil filter

Fuel injector cleaner
Water for the windshield with a blue die added after...
Windshield wipers
Cabin air filter
Engine air filter

Rotate tires

Upsell brakes

Spray red stuff on battery

Replace brake fluid
Transmission fluid change
Coolant service

Alignment check

Problems found during maintenance:

Oil pan leaking by transmission, timing cover seal leaking by water pump and alternator side. Fixed under warranty.

And upsell anything.

Thanks for the suggestions guys but it works out for me as time saved and convenience outweighs the extra cost. If I can maintain work and family schedule with the least interupption then I'll pay for it. I'm sure there are other folks that have hectic work and family schedules that this makes sense, of course if you can afford it. I've heard horror stories about independent shops even high end ones so maybe it's a trust thing for me too. Out of work techs? Do they have all the parts/fluids ready, access to lift, alignment machine, etc.? How do I make them accountable if they mess up? Can they get job done as fast as a dealer and give me a free loaner? If independent shop or tech finds a problem halfway through job, will they have necessary parts to fix it asap or am I out of a car for several days? Kudos to those that can DIY and spend the evening or the weekends to work on their cars or know independent shops they trust that can do it cheaper, you guys are lucky.

I'd say that for any given brand there are more excellent indie shops than there are excellent dealers. I DIY most of my maintenance work but I also know a good indie and a good dealer for each of the makes I drive.
The only reason I have my MS3 serviced at the dealer is because of Mazda's reputation for looking for any excuse to void a warranty. In the case of my MS3 winter beater I've had three major warranty repairs prior to 50K.
