Hi guys

FYI, I did a test drive of the WRX on a race track in MTL and really got to push it.

Once you sit in the car, you forget that it looks ugly compared to a P5 and you appreciate the funky pedals and momo wheel.

It DOES perform ok, but not great. It may have 220HP but it weights 300 extra kilos... thats like 700lbs! And the turbo feels laggy.
What id does good is handling the road.

But what kills the WRX is the price. If it was priced 5000USD cheaper, I'd consider but it's just too much money for such an unpretty, over-hyped car. It's a great car. But the bang for the buck ratio is BAD.

BTW, the WRX you see on the tv ads has 4000USD of extras like the 17" wheels and extra gauges...

Don't sell your P5's just yet...
my $0.02

"But the bang for the buck ratio is BAD."

What?!? There is a 4 second 0-60 difference between the two cars plus you get AWD and strong handling. Yes, the car is ugly (which is a personal opinion) and is more expensive (Edmunds TMV $22,958) than our cars (TMV $16,346), but from a performance standpoint, the WRX is one of the best bangs for buck in North America.

To beat a WRX, you would have to spend the following:

$81,975 on a Jaguar XKR
$41,025 on an Audi S4
$52,365 on a Porsche Boxter S
$71,895 on a Mercedes-Benz CLK55 AMG
$72,561 on an Audi S8
$51,545 on a Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG
$73,245 on a BMW M5
$48,605 on a BMW M3
$50,555 on a Chevrolet Corvette Z06

Pretty impressive for a car priced in the low 20s.

oh yahhh I play video games all the time, I've played that game all of once!! Just a reply I made, also you don't have to spend that much to get a car faster then a wrx you could buy a used rx-7 for 20,000 or you could buy a supra which is way better then all for 26,000 so why do you only list new cars besides german cars suck large.

"so why do you only list new cars"

I thought the thread was a discussion about new cars.

You forgot about a couple of muscle cars:

Rustang GT and the Fireturd

Both are American and a little more than the WRX but you can make them a lot faster in a straight line.

It pains me, because I'm not a Honda fan...but you also left out the:
Honda S2000
Acura RSX

At least if you get the Rustang GT you can get the cool Steve McQueen "Bullit" wheels on not have to pay like $3000 like on the WRX.

Thom

You are right...I forgot the Trans Am and NSX.

I don't think that the RSX Type-S would make it - I thought the 0-60 times were in the mid 6s. The Type-R might, but it hasn't been released in NA yet.

I thought The Mustang is only made in the GT version. I don't think they make the SVT anymore. My slow-ass 323i can almost beat a GT.

Well the RSX regardless of what "TYPE" is a direct competitor for price to performance for the WRX, no matter how much I dislike the below 6000k rpm performance.

The Mustang is still made in the V6 slow format as well as the GT and SVT Cobra. Not to mention the very fast very limited edition Cobra R. Very nice SCCA package, fuel cell and 0-60 performance in the 4 second range. It's under 40k and they only make like 500 a year or so.

The SVT Cobra does 0-60 in 4.8 and the 1/4 mile in 13.5@107mph with 320hp. That's pretty impressive if you ask me. (all for $28k)

Anyone know the acceleration of the GT? I'm sure it's going to be below 6 seconds.

Thom

I wasn't focusing on competitors - I was identifying cars that had quicker 0-60 times. Carpoint has the 0-60 time for the 160 hp RSX at 8.7 seconds. The Type-S was listed at 6.2 seconds.

Since the SVT Mustang doesn't come in a 2002 model, I did not list it. You are right - the 2001 model is friggen fast.

The GT is supposed to run 6.4-6.8 0-60 times, depending who you talk to.

german cars suck large, mazdaspeed? ha, yeah right, the germans make the best quality car of any country in the world. and when you look at those prices you also gotta think of what kind of car you are getting besides speed. the wrx is certainly more spartan than any of those cars...oh and my favorite company is porsche. sure if you look at the boxter or boxter s, you are gonna think about how its kinda slow for such an expensive car. but what you have to look at with porsche is your high end models. lets see... a porsche gt2 can beat a diablo vt for what, $150,000 dollars less? thats a bargain if you ask me...and really, the diablo can reach a higher top end, but where can you think of that you're going to be going 220 mph? 196 is just fine for me...

I agree German cars sport the best quality. Besides BMW had one of the fastest 4 cylinders in the 80's with the 200hp normally aspirated M3, not to mention the ultra sexy body.

Although as of lately I'm not very impressed with the interiors of the Porche.

As Americans we get robbed because we get heavily diluted versions of the germans cars. Especially when you see the 400+hp station wagon...RS4!!!!

Thom

Yeah I wish the P5 was like the RS4 :) Daily schedule for a RS4 owner: Take the kids to soccer, buy groceries, spank a M3 then go home and cook dinner :D
