My old RX-7 obsession has come back to smack me around some. They were the first cars I really fell in love with.. The FD3S. Sigh. =/

I know some of you have had them.. what's the insurance like?

And how much do you think I could find one in good working condition for?

It's not too bad if you don't want collision. :)

I would expect to pay the following, private party, for an RX-7 in good to excellent condition:

1st gen: $1000-$5000
2nd gen: $2500-$7500
3rd gen: $12000-$17500

if your under 25 the insurance is going to **** u.... but other than that if u want a 3rd gen ur better off buying one with a blown motor and rebuilding it. that way u know its fresh and wont have any surprises as far as the motor goes. i bought mine with a blown motor and an exceptionally good exterior and interior for only 7k i rebuilt the motor which only cost about 2500( well for me at least) but can run u into the 4-5k range depending on the condition of the plates and housings.

ohh and by the way if anyone needs any rotary parts let me know i got a lot of connections in P.R. and here in Miami

TwistedRX7 hit the nail on the head. get one with a blown motor 5-7K in decent condition and have a good shop rebuild it. If your in So Cal I can help. My bro's race shop picked up a FD for 3K with a blown motor. It is a black on black R1 model too. I have been driving a Fd lately and I love it. Not as much as my 1st gen but I love it. I might cancel my order on my RX-8 and get an FD instead.
Also, look for one w/o much body damage as some areas of that car are damm near unfixable, well at least w/o bondo. Good luck, their dope.

Insurance will definitely kill you. My insurance company added on a Performance Automobile surcharge when I owned my two RX7s. Owning an RX7 is a commitment. It will need lots of preventative maintenance and tinkering for it to run top notch.

yup...insurance is a b****...maintenance can be expensive but but you can save a lot by doing all the work yourself (only recommended if you really know your way around with engines)...with the help of a friend we installed a rebuilt engine in a 93 R1...it's run fine with constant checking of stuff

Bah, sounds like I won't be getting my FD until I'm through with Mazda college, and then some. Thanks a lot for all the info though.. 56k says, I will keep up with only one forum.

when i was looking into buying a 93-95' 3rd gen the insurance was like $650-$780 i think for 6 months which was deffinetly better than the $918 i was paying every 6 months for a brand new trans am in 2000. so what i'm saying is,the insurance isn't great, but it certainly could be worse and considering the cars are just about if not 10 years old now that should get you a break.

i ended up going with a TII which the insurance on that was sooo much lower it wasn't even funny. still had lots of power, styling, and handled damn good too!

All I have to say is start off in a FC. NA better yet. lol. Become acquainted with the rotary and then eventually move forward into a Turbo model. The handling of all of them in general will be enough to keep you smiling for a long time.

Otherwise plan to spend a lot on a mechanic or expect to do a lot of upgrades yourself for reliability.

Anwyas best of luck,

Rishie

I been into rotary for 10 years and have yet to move up. I mean i got some pretty powerful FC's, but I still am scared of dealing with the FD's issues financially.
