Gas

I was just wondering what octane everyone tries to run in their cars? I always fill up at the same Shell station that has 93 octane but some co-workers and friends of mine are too picky about their high perfomance cars.

For example, my buddy has a Jetta 1.8T that requires premium fuel (according the the manual) but he fills up w/ regular.

Does anyone put regular fuel in their MSP?

Don't do it.

And tell your buddy with the Jetta that he is not getting all the power he could...the PCM will probably pull timing if you put low octane gas in. Same thing with the MSP's PCM. And in the worst case scenario, the low octane gas can cause pinging, which will destroy the motor rather quickly.

91 or higher. All of the time. No exceptions.

FI cars need higher octane fuel to decrease the chances of ping and/or knock. You could run regular, but it's not recommended that you do. I would say the only time you would run regular fuel is if there is no premium around and you are running on vapours.

Premium only for my MSP. I buy fuel at our local Costco, so the $$$ is a little easier to deal with than what the regular fuel stations are charging for premium.

my 1.8T's manual says you can run lower octane.....i run plus and it does fine. was running regular and then plus but have been running 89 over the past couple months.....car only has 6K on it now!

if driven hard it is better to run the higher octane.......

RXMmazdaspeed - I just put $20.00 (for a shade under 8 gallons) at BJ's last night (like Sam's or Costco here in Atlanta, but with a more *ahem* memorable name) and paid $2.699 a gallon for premium, which is what the other gas stations are charging for regular. Regular at Shell/BP has been going for $2.61 - $2.70 a gallon; premium $2.79 up to $2.87. QT is usually three or four cents cheaper than the others. If you don't have a membership to a wholesale club, it might be worth the money.

Clark Howard suggests this site to see where the cheapest fuel is in your area:

What kills me is my commute back and forth downtown. The stop-n-go-n-sit-still traffic is brutal. I just sit in my car and watch the gas gauge drop ever closer to "E" without having moved a car length. (argh)

Great link POST! (evil)

dude your like the 3rd new guy from MI in the past few days, sweet

as for the gas, dont go any lower than 93, I always use Sunoco 94 unless I cant find one and then I have to put 93 from some other station in

at the price of gas now its insane, yesterday regular gas was 2.80 gl in Troy :(

in the manual it says put premium in it.some idiot put regular in my car last time i filled it up when i told him super/premium.wut an fn moron.car runs a bit sluggish compared to when premium is it.plus less mileage out of it with reg gas.i dont care how much premium gas prices go up.im almost up to $3.00 here in NJ.only premium for my MSP.

sunoco.....mondays through wednesday has 6 cents off the gallon of premium gas.if anyone cared to kno.well at least over here in nj its like that.

Well, once when my pops borrowed my car he filled the tank with regular...car did not knock or ping, but imagine the usualy hesitation we get...times about 50. As soon as the car hit boost, it would be like hitting a brick wall. The ECU did all sorts a crazy s*** to try and save the engine....it sucked major balls. I let the car idle alot till that gas disappeared so I could fill it with premium...but I WOULD never run generally any lower than 91 in my car, and thats only when I'm road trippin and the gas station carries nothing higher. The place by my house runs 94 through the pump, and the speed loves it.

the place I go offers 3.5 cents/litre off every day. And with 25 litres I get 25cents off and 25 more off every 10 litres over that. It's pretty sweet.

well here we can only get 92 octain or lwr. i only use shell or chevron 92 octain.....

With all these scientific advancements, and we still have yet to develope a widely used
'man-made' gasoline. Is it even possible? Or would you just 'disappear' as soon as the oil companies found out?

You should read up on all the kick ass stuff there doing with hydrogen power, they can power a car with hydrogen and oxygen fusion and the only emission is pure water. I believe Arnold Swartsinwhatever drives one now and there's a couple more in Japan. Down side- as soon as they make the global switch to hydrogen, the MAN is just gonna start charging 4.50 a gallon for that...damn the man!

Biodiesel. Some people refine it themselves in their own homes (boom01)
