gas with ethanol

Is the ethanol additive in sunoco gas bad for our cars? I've heard that it will cause carbon buildup.

Also, will our engines handle 104 octane on a regular basis?

And, yes, i did search, not a lot, but i did search.

thanks for any input,

Jim

Ethanol is not good for TURBO apps.
Try to find a gas station that is 100% pure gasoline in your area.
I find it at ,of all places,Meijer in my area.
All the turbo guys round here use Meijer gas when its available.

And the 104 you are referring to is prob leaded race gas which will clog your cats if they are still on the car.It will also clog up your injectors over a period of time. The injectors can be cleaned though.I run Turbo Blue when needed for the track. It is 116 I beleive.
Matt

Its not "bad" it just runs hotter, and you cannot have cat's, or you'll burn them out and have major problems.
The Octane rating is just how resistant to detonation temperatures it is. Higher octane has higher resistance, which is why people run more boost on it, or its called "race" gas.

turbo blue is 109.5
C16 is 116

Homemade race gas
93 octane pump-8gallons-2gallons xylene(117 octane)
16oz bottle of Marvels Mystery Oil
~100 octane.

Ethanol is in MOST gas in the country. That wont clog cats if that is what you were saying. If you were referring to the 104 then ,sorry you are right.
And yes the Octane rating of a fuel is its resistance to detonation.
If you run TOO high of an octane on an application where it is not needed ,you can actually LOSE power versus using the proper octane for your application. If you are at stock boost ,Run 93 ,it will be fine.

Thank You ,I couldn't remember off hand.
It been a long time since I got to run some of that GOOD stuff!:D
Damn WINTER!

104 could definitely be unleaded, which would be fine for your cats. just check if it's leaded or unleaded. unleaded=you're fine running it. leaded=it'll kill your cats over time

VERY TRUE!
I concur!

winter does suck... other than the cold air being good for the turbo...
The tires dont grip, the roads dont grip.. ARGH. :)

They add ethanol to gas in my county, but the counties around here dont... It sucks, but its not a huge difference.

Oh yea, my county just got rid of the Emissions testing, so i screw a cat, its time for turbo blue this summer.

Love your avatar.

I know this sounds dumb, but would the gas attendents know this? or is it on the pump somewhere?

I am not sure if it is a government requirement, but most of the gas stations have to have a sticker on the pump telling you if it contains an ethanol or methanol/gas mix. Most of the stations around here have a sticker that says"10%MAX Ethanol mix".The pumps at Meijers round here have a sticker on the pump the read "100% PURE GASOLINE"
Brings a smile to my face while fillin 'er up!:D

BTW,Who's Avatar?
Matt:)

I have two questions... since there seems to be a mixed view. Is or isn't ethanol bad for our cars? And, what is the difference between running 93 and 94 octane gas? I have a sunoco near me that has both 93 and 94 octane gas, but also a sticker saying 10% max ethanol in the fuel.

A brief summary on what to use would be much appreciated :D

no difference in the 93/94 octane...but if they sell 94 for the same, id get it.
Ethanol is added to gas to help reduce emissions, since its combustible alcohol, and not a hydrocarbon.

Me and a friend from work had this discussion yesterday and he decided to call sunoco, and according to sunoco, ethanol is not bad for cars, and supposidly is better for turbo charged engines. He said the ethanol has a "cooling effect" on engines. He did not elaborate on that anymore. Also, it is a federal law that dictates that 10% is the MAX of any additive to gasoline.

Me personally, I am going to stick with Mobil/BP gas, 93 octane, because there are no additives.

If anyone knows differently, please inform me.

Jim

ethanol burns hotter than gas, cooling effects.. BS.

It will not hurt the car though.

Xylol and xylene are the same i think, but check labels, or do some research, as im probably wrong.
