Gas tank flap broke just want some thoughts about it...

Hi everyone...my first posting here and I just wanted some of your thoughts, advice to my problem... here we go...

I own a 2002 mp5 and I dont know when I first noticed this but one day when I was filling gas while inserting the gas nozzle I noticed that the flap was missing... I know that you cant pull the flap out cause there's some kind of metal ring that blocks it, so it must have fell in the gas tank ...now what I wanna know is what do you think or if someone know what happens when that happens I hope that makes sense???? Sometimes my car, while Im at a stop it feels like its gonna die, then when I go its jerky for a couple seconds then everythings smooth going...and every so often a putting noise would come from my muffler.( I installed a performance muffler and thought it was the problem, but it isn't) If someone can give me some advice (beside"why dont you bring it to the dealership") would help me out a whole bunch...

I don't recall if I have one or not but even if we did have a flap, I don't think it would block the pick up on our fuel pump.

Is your car auto or 5 spd?

I know there is a flap, cause one day my sister asked me to use the rest of the gas that was in one of those emergency gas and I had the hardest time trying to get the nozzle pass the flap so I stuck a pen in and pushed the flapper.
I have an appointment next week at the dealership.

i have the flap 2 however i do not use it because the gas cap is connected w/ a plastic thing so it does not fall off or u don't 4get it on the roof of your car and drive off w/o it. i also do not c how that flap can fall into the gas tank. there was a prob w/ the tiptronic type P5's crapping out while idling but i was noticing it was w/ the 2003 models. there were past threads on this problem which apparently not even mazda can fix. if i find it, i'll post it. good luck. let us know if u find anything and welcome.

Thank you for the heads up and I hope you do find that thread...I wanna be just a bit more educated about this thing, I dont wanna pay for something done and then pay for something done again, then come to find out they cant even fix it at all. You know one more thing I forgot to mention was that the engine light, sometimes it comes on, then goes away, then once while going up Mililani Mauka it started blinking, right now its gone and hasn't come on for a while, gees seems like my car is moodier than me on my period lol. if your CEL does come on and stays on, i have a suggestion. if u have done no mods to your car or cant recall doing anything to the motor to trigger the CEL, unplug your negative terminal on the battery, step on your brakes (the brake lights drain the electricity), and replug it in. it should reset your ECU and your light should not come on the next time you start the car.

i play with some crap in the motor too much and i threw a CEL yesterday. i couldnt even start my car... heh, but i just unplugged, reset, replugged, and the CEL went away.

hate to say it, but usually the blinking C.E.L. means that your engine is misfiring. i had that problem too. and i don't think it's because of the trans either because mines is 5 speed. it could be the EGR. (that's what was wrong with mine last time) i dunno (uhm). keep us posted.
