Gas Pains

Ok so the last 2 or 3 times I've filled up with gas, the car has either shut off completely when I started it after fill-up, or dropped to really REALLY low idle and chugged badly and almost shut off.

This only happens when I'm getting gas. I used to fill till the last drop, but today I just waited for the pump to click, then filled up to the closest 50 cents. Still the same thing, it chugged bad before finally settling down.

Any ideas??

when do you fill your tank? When it gets to a 1/4 tank or when the gas light comes on? Only reason I ask is that I've heard if you continuously let your tank get close to empty the pump can start sucking air which would lead to the symptoms you're talking about. Also make sure the gas cap is on tight enough.

Ah crap, I got to stop doing that lol. I've done it like 5-6 times already.. nice to know.

I would say the exact moment the pump sucks air its going to stall. And besides, when the light comes on there is still like 2 gallons of reserve left. Maybe there's something wrong with your fuel gauge in the tank? If I were to fill up right when the light comes on the pump would stop around 12.5 gallons

id have to take a look at the fuel component diagram to see for sure, but if you are filling up past the point when the pump shuts off you may be flooding the evap canister. Its not a good idea to overfill the tank, especially to the point where fuel starts coming um the fill tube

It's a (bad) habit of mine to get in every drop I can. Did the same thing yesterday. Didn't shut off, but it certainly wanted to. I got a little over 12 gallons in, and the light had not long come on. Typically I fill before the light comes on. Next time (likely Saturday) I will do my best to remember to not add after the first pump shutoff and see what happens.

Forgot to ever update... first dealership tried to blame my intake for the problem (eh?) but reluctantly gave me a new gas cap anyway. It didn't help for s***.

I removed the intake and went back to stock, went to a different dealership who actually took the time to diagnose the problem, and they said bad purge valve. They replaced it yesterday and I filled up and it behaved!! (alright)

Not that you haven't gotten the issue fixed, but....... Don't top off your tank. Whenever the pump stops just leave it there. Topping off the tank can cause issues with the emissions system (i.e. your purge valve), so you very well could have caused the PCV to fail and need to be replaced.

Also in theory the gas light comes on at ~3 gallons remaining.

Yeah I've been trying hard to stop doing that. I mean, this is like the 9th or 10th vehicle I've had and I've always done the same thing, and never had a problem before, so it's going to take some work to break the habit.
