gas keeps overflowing?

About 2/3 times I've filled my 5 up so far, the damn thing overflows! What I'll do is either manually hold the pump open or "lock" it open and of course, fill it until the first click. After the first click, I never pump to further clicks with the intent to top it off... just the first click and done.

Well, I've been doing that, but when I get to the first click, a split second later gas overflows and all down the side of my beautiful Whitewater (shocked) . It's only maybe 1/8 - 1/4 gallon or so, but this can't keep happening. I thought one time was a fluke of the pump I was using, but a 2nd time out of three fill ups and I know something's going on... this never happened in any previous cars of mine.

Anyone experience this phenomenon or have any tips? I'm calling my dealer about it on Monday. Thanks!

Not me , but be careful with that gas running down side of your ride. It might be the gas pump nozzle doesn't have auto shut off. If if keeps happening call the dealer this week and ask if there is a problem with the mazda5 running fuel out of it's side when filling up, like i say it's not happening to me. Jandree, I have never had that happen. I've filled up at least 15 times now, and it always stops. As a matter of fact, sometimes it stops about a gallon before it is actually full, which makes me feel really good because the mileage seems to be really good, until the next tank and that extra gallon goes in and the mileage goes in the tank. I would definitly get that checked out asap. It sounds like you are missing the overflow control mechanism on your new ride.

Mine has done the same thing a few times. It is really
irritating to watch your money dribble down the side of
your ride. I will not have time to take mine to the dealer
for the next little while but if you find out anything please
let me know.

have no idea of why it is doing this but I whatever you do... do not use the cloth they usually have out to use with the window washer/scraper. It may actually has some detergents/abrasives in it to aide in the removal of bugs from your window. Almost a polishing clothe and with the fuel it can really ruin your clearcoat paint.

It has happened to me as well, but not every time.

Nothing like a bit of gas on your clear coat to tick you off.

Well, sorry... gonna have to hold off. My wife's Solara is in the shop for a bunch of warranty stuff but it's scheduled to be done tomorrow. I was holding off calling until we have that car to use. I'll call tomorrow probably, latest Wednesday. Sorry!

Is your engine running while you are pumping.... I found out my MSP will do that if i leave the motor on....

Happened to me at least twice but I was purposely trying to top off to try to get 3 round trips to work on a single tank.

Honestly I find it very difficult to try to figure out how much gas milage/gas I have left. I've gone up to ~442mi with the marker just shy of the arrow next to the fuel gauge and only managed to squeeze ~15.2 gal.

You're kidding right? You are aware it is illegal to "hot fuel" a gasoline powered vehicle! (IE pump fuel into it while the engine is running)

Not to mention incredibly dangerous!

Well, first of all, I filled up from 5/8 to 8/8 tank today and no overflow.

Also, I have a service appt. scheduled for Tuesday next week, I'll report back, although I've got a feeling they'll give me the old "could not replicate" or we couldn't find anything wrong. Oh well, got nothing to lose except the drive... wait a minute, that's the fun part

Have you put winter tires on yet? It'll be too bad if it doesn't drive well in snow even with winter tires.

What winter tires are you running with?? I wouldn't let a 5 loose on snow with the stock Toyo Proxes A18's, not enough grip. We had a real bad wind storm here over the weekend (great weekend to drive Toronto - Kincardine - Detroit and back!!) and I was fighting the whole drive to keep from sliding off the road (wet dark and windy!!)

I'm getting a full set of Pirelli Winter Carving on thursday, and storing my "summer tires" until late april.
