gas keeps overflowing?

Me too!!

I filled up our 5 for the first time yesterday, and wouldn't you know it, I had gas running down the side of the car! (shocked)

Now, I did keep putting a bit of gas in after the first click (to try to round off the $ amount), so that may be what did it. There didn't seem to be a huge amount of gas that ran out, but it was hard to tell since it was almost dark, and the ground was already wet.

Oh, and the car was not running!

I'm anxious to fill it again to see what happens. I'll definitely not try to get a bit extra in there...

Bingo... it does seem like this is normal for a lot of new Mazdas. My co-workers 2005 3 does that too. I just wish I could get to the first click without an incident (ughdance)

Damn it, the CEL came on today. Not sure if it can be put off until the parts come in or if I should get that checked right away... dealership is 45min. away. I'll have to get in touch with them.

While I wasn't expecting it, I'm not surprised. After all, they made a "temporary fix" to the emissions system. Oh well.
could have something to do with the "fix" they gave you, and the whole gas tank pressurization/emission control thing. I'm sure it's not causing any trouble, just letting you know something is amiss, which you already knew.

That's interesting. My 5 has sort of the opposite issue. I have gotten into the habit of topping off lately because when I fill up my 5 it doesn't actually fill up. I have "topped off" up to 3 gallons after the pump clicks off. It just shut off before it was full. This has happened a few times, but never overflowing.

&)$*$(@#*$#!!!!!!! My 5 just died on me! I was headed out from the office to grab lunch and only about 1/8 mile(thankfully) from work at a stop sign, I tried to pull out only to realize the engine was dead! I tried turning it over many times to no avail. To top it off, what do I smell but gasoline! I called a co-worker who helped me push it off into the shoulder, leaving a trail, and puddle of gas behind.

I then called Mazda Roadside Assistance, who said I first need to get clearance with the local FD as far as the gas on the ground being a hazard. FD said it's not a problem so I called MRA back and they sent a tow truck to take it to the closest Mazda dealership, (not my preferred Mazda dealership... too far away, ugh).

So that's where it sits, probably over the weekend before they can find time to service it. I feel like I'm walking on egg shells because I never used this dealership before for service and w/ dealing with them and my original dealershp that's in the middle of servicing for this gas problem. It's pretty obvious that the "temporary fix" is the cause of the problem.

Funny though, tow truck driver... a younger guy maybe in his upper 20's, said "these don't usually give ya problems, I've got a late year Miata". He also said besides accidents, mine is the newest car he's ever towed. What a warm fuzzy feeling I got.

So that's where it stands... :(

Oh crap! What was the temporary fix they performed?
Not a clue but apparently more temporary than anyone expected (ughdance) Hopefully my dealership won't have issue with explaining, in detail, what they did that may have caused this. What a mess...

My P5 did this, but I am pretty sure it was after I removed the charcoal canister and all other emmissions and rewired the engine/ECU harness... so it could have been anything.

Yeah that'll do it. jandree22 was having issues with gas overflowing when filling the tank though now it sounds like whatever the dealership did as a temporary measure screwed things up even more.

Jandree22 is there anyone you know on the forums with a 5 that lives close enough to you that you could meet up and check things out? I don't know what to even look for except to just check and make sure that everything is the same with your car. Something is definitely up with the filler.

Well my 1st call would have been to the dealership that did the "quick" fix. If you really wanted them to "play" again with your ride that was the way to go.
Even now with the car in another shop, I would be demanding a loaner if not from the dealership you are at ,then forsure from the "quick fix" dealer.

Good luck and remember a car is nothing more than a ride.

As much as I wanted to keep going to my original dealership for service as sign of customer loyalty, it's a one way (and out of the way) trip of 45 min from home and of course now, they're really scaring me from future service.

The dealership it's at now is actually smack between home and work, so no special trips to drop it off. I'll have to see what kind of work they do for me. It is confirmed now, of course, that I'll have to wait until at least Monday for service... they couldn't fit me in this afternoon, which is completely understandable.

In other words, I may be switching dealerships for service after this snafoo. Perhaps it was one honest little mistake, but it caused a BIG problem.

No, I didn't get a loaner. More hassle than it's worth for me, my wife and I rarely need seperate cars at any one time, so we can just use hers for the weekend.

My experience has been that a dealership moves a little quicker when you have a loaner. And a loaner is sweet when it comes time to pick up your car, you dont have to get someone to take you there.
Rememeber this was a dangerous situation you were put into and luckily you dodged a bullet, be pro active and take the bull by the horns, don't sit back and say they are doing the best they can. Let that "quick" fix dealership know where your car is at and what happened. Also tell them that you think corporate should know about this situation.(a major safety issue) Finally, Dealerships have contacts in other dealerships, you'll be taken care of more quickly this way than by just sitting back and hoping for the best.

Agreed. That "quick fix" put you and your wife in danger. Just let corporate know so that it doesn't happen agian.

Dealers do work together

Hmmm, I'm never to old to learn, Please tell me whats wrong with my suggestions, I have read many of your posts you seem knowledgeable. I value your opinion.

Well FWIW, I did let my original dealership (Ladd Hanford) know that my car is dead and leaking gas, and that MRA is only willing to tow it to the other dealership (Faulkner).

I too think it's a good idea to let corporate know... but as stupid as this sounds, I worry about corporate coming back down to Ladd Hanford with what's going on, and then having them be pissed at me for reporting it. Yes, I know they deserve it for screwing my 5 up, but I really don't bad blood with that dealership even though it appears I'll be taking my service to Faulkner in the future.

Jandree.....Sorry to hear. Like everyone said, obviously the dealer's mess-up.
IMO, you should still take it up to corporate. Who knows what leaking gas could've caused ?
