Gas cap

I distinctly remember a thread on a gas cap problem, but I can't seem to find it. Anyone know where it is hiding. I could not get mine off today (and really needed to get gas) and had to really tear it up with a pair of channel locks to finally get it off. What is the story here?

They just have issues with it. Are you under warranty? If so, the dealer will replace it.

Glad to know that I'm not crazy - I have this problem at times too!

Here is the thread:

The problem is that the search doesn't recognize words three characters or less in size, thus "gas" and "cap" are not allowed. I did a search for "stuck" to find it.

What year is your Mazda5? I'm wondering if this is still a problem on '09s.

Speaking of gas caps, here is a thread that talks about how to clip the gas cap to the gas cap door rather than letting it hang down against the car:

So what actually happens? The gas cap gets stuck and when you twist to open it the one-way plastic teeth inside breaks?

I'm thinking of a way to prevent it. Maybe a dab of grease around the treads can extend the life of the cap.

1. The grease is maybe going to work. (silly)

2. Mine is tight but not that tight and know this, (mine at least) is NOT a ratchet type cap, where you turn it until it CLICK, CLICK, CLICK, CLICKS...

3. If it's a problem, go to a local parts store and buy an aftermarket cap one that has the ratchet style. (RTM)

4. I think Mazda was in on the thinking the tighter the cap, less the evaporation of gas or spilling if someone fills their tank to the top. :)

Just my .02 worth. Oh and who here has made a little cable to hold the cap? I did.

Peace!(rei)

Canadian Mazda5 gas caps are already ratchet type

This is standard for Canadian Mazda5 I think for US too

Mine is an '09 and the cap worked fine until the last time. Weather had cooled, but I don't know if that had anything to do with it. I suspect Mazda changed the plastic to reduce the coefficient of friction.

do not go to autozone or any other place and buy a universal cap!
you will not seal off the gas tank and prob get a CEL for an EVAP leak

you should all still be under warranty so go to the dealer and get the OEM
