2002 Mazda Protege5
Hey, I own a 2002 Mazda Protege5. I need to repair my transmission. I can't afford a new transmission, nor do I need a whole new one yet. I have somebody who's going to help me to repair my transmission. I wanted a kit or a place to get parts for the job. I need Synchros, Dog Gears, and possibly a shift fork.

I'll give a little insight to the problem I'm having. The car is beginning to develop a grind in some gears, I'm not sure if it's in several gears, but I know it's in 5th. It is also popping out of 5th. The pop out isn't constantly, only once in a while. And sometimes it'll do it two to three times in a row.

Right now, my only option is to get a "new" transmission from a junkyard Protege or 626 (or other FS powered '93+ car). I was hoping to just repair the one in my car since I won't have an accurate idea of what the junkyard tranny has been through.

I would really appreciate it if you guys could tell me where to buy parts. Thank you.

if its just in 5th gear you can replace the synchro for that easily enough without dropping the trans. if its multiple gears i be inclined to say clutch.. there was a website that had all the parts to rebuild the trans but i dont think im allowed to mention it anymore. pm for that.
buuuut. its honestly a lot cheaper to just assume clutch, replace that and find a junkyard trans. any 626/probefsde/323/mx6fsde ect ect will work though the 626 has a higher ratio for 5th. its a gamble, but just try shifting the car in the yard and feel it out i guess.

rebuilding the trans is kind of no joke though. you would need a press and stuff. im confident you can do it at home but just buying bearings/synchros and forks is going to cost more than just getting another one and hopeing for the best lol. then you can take your time and screw with the one you think is f'd whenever.

i guess the bottom line with that being, does it have to get you to work the following monday or not lol. dropping the trans is gonna be saturday, putting it back in could easily be sunday. though you might be a more efficient mechanic with more help =)

That's what I've been told by several people already. Thing is that there isn't a lot in the yards around here, and what there is, is expensive. Very expensive for a junkyard part. I'm gonna keep looking, but I was hoping to have another option. And the guy helping me does Derby, so he has, or he says he has, all the stuff I'd need.

its kind of the same thing here.. yards want obscenely high dollar for parts. if i took a ferry i could get a cheap one, but cost of ferry ect ect.

one option is to find a cheap high milage car and try driving it. i got two p5's for $1000 with high milage/blown motor. the mazda master rebuild kit is up around $800 though if you were to go that route.

I did some looking, and I may have found a few options. Nothing from a protege haha, they wanted $650 for that trans and it was higher miles than mine. But there is four trannys, two from 626s and two from MX-3s. those are about $250-300 and lower miles than mine, and an A rating at that. Just need to find out how to get them back home. Probably just throw it on top of some cardboard in the back of my parents' Explorer lol.
