yeah when someone uses a crushed spring, they're really only doing so because they want the to be able to run more power on their car without spending the cash on a more expensive BOV to hold higher boost pressure. Think of it as a poor man's upgrade, lol.
also keep in mind he said he was using a bypass valve and not a bov.... BOV's allow VTA (vent to atmosphere) and give off that loud cool sneezing sound when you get off the throttle PSSSSSSSSSSSSSHT
however in our car's case that is not the proper setup to have, which is why many BOVs come with "recirc" fitment options (most usually charge extra), which basically causes them to function like a bypass valve
it takes the "vented air" and recirculates it back into the system.... so your intake air is actually the air that was originally metered/registered by your Mass Air Sensor (MAS), where as if you had a bov venting to the atmosphere, then you're losing some air as it vents, and you're getting less intake air (in the engine) than your MAS had registered. to put it bluntly it's part of what matters with your air to fuel ratio, running rich and running lean... you'll probably find better info in Wikipedia, or someone can explain it better than I.
