FS-DE Oil System

Finally getting everything put back together with the new oil system, and had one question to those of you running relocated filter setups: Do you take any special precautions to prime the extra volume of oil lines when changing the oil? Though, I suppose if your filter is at the highest point in the system, there's not going to be much empty volume after you replace it...

Anyway, just curious.

On our race motors, just to be cautious, on initial start up we take the plugs out and turn the motor over until we get at least 15 - 30 psi oil pressure. Then put the plugs back in and fire up the motor. This way you know the system is primed before any serious load is put on it. Probably over kill but good practice on expensive parts ;)

Hoping someone can help

Has anyone heard from Tom lately? I have been trying to raise him by PM about an oil pump upgrade we have arranged.

No success in that over the past month.

Whoa now Chris! I may not have been on this forum in the past few days but I have responded to every PM you have sent!
I'm sorry the pumps have taken longer than usual but unfortunately I have been dealing with backorders on some parts we use in this process. I will PM you directly with your specific details.

Thanks!
Tom

Tom, where do you run your psi guage sender? I have mine at the block tee'd off with the turbo oil feed and have just recently noticed some different oil psi running conditions.

All the engineers I have spoken to say that the best placement for the sender is exactly where you have yours. This point allows you to see exactly what the main bearings are getting as that point samples from the oil galley that supplies the bottom of the engine.

What have you seen?

Thanks!
Tom

Recently with some hard driving I noticed that oil psi has dropped about 7-10 psi at highway cruise rpm and the guage seems to read more transiently than it did before. I just parked it for winter so I will be dropping the oil in the next week or so. We'll see what it looks like. I don't want to pull the pump but i may have to to see what's up.

What else do you suggest looking deeper into?

Generally, you don't want your pressure reading taken from the "T". It's not a true pressure of what's inside the engine. Some of that pressure is flowing PAST the sensor, out to the turbo. I ran my oil feed from the oil filter adapter instead, and screwed my pressure sender directly into the block itself (see build thread) and the pressure readings were about 10psi higher and more consistent.

I used a stealthmode adapter (left of the oil filter) to hook up my oil pressure gauge. The line to the gauge is not visible in this pic.

A big thank you to Tom. I have received my coated KL-ZE pump and Petersen External pressure relief valve. Very pleased with the final outcome for the various rotor to housing gap specs as compared with OEM "factory specs"

Does doc b still offer to do the oil pumps for the msp

Yes we stil offer this service. PM me and I will give you the address to send your pump.
Prices remain the same since we began this service:
Oil pump service $100
External regulator $130
Return shipping $25 ( continental US )

Thanks!
Tom

How long is the turn around for printing the oil pump? I'm going to have the engine out for a clutch/flywheel, VTCS removal, timing belt/tensioner, seals, etc. sometime in January. I'm trying to have all the parts in hand before i do the work, but figured on having the car up for a week to 10 days. Figured the work on the pump and all the shipping would take longer, just wanted a rough idea thats all.

thanks for offering this, seems like an awesome service. Glad its still available.

The current turn around time is about three weeks. Once we get into the holiday season it may go up a bit from there due to vacations/etc. If you need it faster we have an expedite service set up that runs $25 more and takes the turnaround down to about half normal.

Thanks for your interest! If you would like your pump done PM me and I will give you our shipping address.

Thanks!

Sounds good. I'll pm you sometime soon, still need to finalize when i'm actually doing all this work...and source a few more parts.

Hi, would like to send you a pump after the holidays, but I have one question,

is it better to work with a new pump or as long as it's not damaged the thickness of the coating will be adjusted accordingly?

Thanks

We have worked with both new and used pumps with good results in both cases. Have only encountered a few used pumps that were too far out to be worth coating. Before we do any work we always open them up, take measurements and PM the owner so they can decide if they want to proceed. We never ask for payment until the owner is comfortable moving forward.

Thanks!
Tom
