Mazda 3s
Okok...so I'm probably queer for asking this question...but the M3s are front wheel drive....but how come the dust forms in the back wheels? Usually the dust usually forms where the wheels are gettin the power...anyone know why? cause i sure dont.. (huh)

thats probably brake dust.

also if you have a hatch it gets real dirty in the back because of the increased turbulance a hatch creates (vs a sedan)

The drive wheels have nothing to do with brake dust. The dust come from the brake pads and this car has 4 wheel disc brakes.

i thought that there was a small problem with the mazda3s where the brake pads would contact the rotors a lil' too much and creating a lot of dust in the rear wheels

Come to think of it, I do hear more than your regular brake noise coming from the rear brakes. I know I have a problem coming on where extenisive disk grooving in happening and brake dust builds up on my rims noticibly on a daily basis and perhaps this is one of the reasons for the problems.. off to the dealership this weekend I guess.

Brake Dust

There has been a lot of talk about it on other web-sites. The rear wheels on almost all the models (with ABS or not) have been building up a lot of brake-dust while the front wheels look pretty clean most of the time.

The groove problem (and Mazda does know about it, but has not issued a TSB on it yet), is said to be either the calipers not fully releasing or that there was a slew of rotors that had a slight "raising" of serial numbers right on the disk (extremely hard to see) and that was causing the pad and the rotor not to "marry" evenly while braking.

Some cars are worse than others and some have no problem at all (luckily mine) with the grooving. Although, my left rear disk did start to groove a little bit when I first bought it and strangely enough has stopped and the disk looks very good now. BUT!!, the brake dust???, oh yea, I have to wipe down those rear wheels every day to keep them matching to the clean look of the front wheels.

I was always under the impression it was the brake bias...wherever the most braking is going is where the most dust forms... for us it's the fron't brakes and you guys the rears. maybe that is the case with the pads cause the wheels that are collored gun metal also have the rings in the rotors...not shure but suposedly mazda came out with new pads to rid us both of this problem....
