Well, the noise problem has been solved! And it turned out to be a loose strut nut. Either it wasn't tightened all the way when I replaced the front shocks or it just worked its way loose.
I suspected front sway bar bushings and thought at nearly 100,000 miles there was enough probable cause to go ahead and replace them. I considered replacing them myself but thought it would probably be too aggravating and time consuming, and I didn't know for sure if it would fix the noise or not. So I took the car to the dealer and they found it was the strut nut.
Bonus: they also found my passenger engine mount is leaking fluid. I never noticed that when I looked at it before but looks like I'll be replacing that soon
