Front floor mats...

Hey guys, the 5 I picked up used had all the floor mats bundled up in the back seats (looks like they had them shampooed, that's nice of them!).

I went to put them all in the right places before we go on a little family trip, and lo and behold the front ones are MISSING!

Since I picked it up at a local manheim auction, contacting the previous owner will be difficult, not to mention they probably don't even have the item anymore.

Meanwhile, I bought some plastic material for lining cabinet drawers (looks like the kind of plastic that goes under an office chair, with the dimples on the floor to keep it from sliding) and did a quick (and admittedly sloppy) job cutting it to approximately the right shape.

Well, I just HATE how that looks. I like the OE felt look better. Has anyone "upgraded" their floor mats to aftermarket ones on the 5? If so, what do you recommend? Or better yet, what did you do with your old OE ones (hint hint)?

I previously purchased the Mazda all-weather floor mats for my MS3; don't waste your money on those. Since our 5 is driven mostly by my wife in kid hauling mode, I sprung for the Weathertech floor mats -- I opted for the first and second row only. They are pricey, but they are fantastic and I highly recommend them.

Good to know the Mazda all weather mats aren't worth the dinero. I have the factory carpet mats still and those things are so crappy.

How well do the Weathertech mats fit? Are they custom made for the 5 or do you have to trim them yourself?

They are the very definition of custom fit; no cutting required.

Really? How so?

I love the factory mats. No wear spots or missing nubs from the underside.
Mine are black with white lettering-awesome!

I'm basing this off of what happened with the factory mats in my wife's old Mazda 3. They began separating, curling, and wearing by about 40k on the car. The mats in my 5 appear to be fine (I only have 22k on this '06) but they are just as thin and flimsy as the ones in her old 3. Guess I am just expecting them to wear prematurely.

this is the general concensus on the mazda3 forums as well. but since i liked the look of the mazda3 OEM carpeted mats (and the white embroidered "Mazda3"), what i did to extend the life of them was to keep a second set dedicated to winter use (i found them on ebay with local pickup, almost new, for $10) from december through april. those got all the sand, salt and crap. meanwhile, the summer set got a shampoo treatment each fall and hung in the basement all winter, ready for spring duty. when i traded in the 3 (with 42,000 miles) for the 5, the salesman was impressed with how nice the mats still were. he said they all get holes from the driver's heel by 40,000 miles. i plan to do the same with the 5.

also, i know that many people like the weather tech mats for winter, but i think that carpeted mats actually do a fine job of holding melted snow and such... i've never had water spill over the edges and onto the floor.

I think the factory mats in my 2010 Sport will wear well, but to me they attract and won't release some stuff. Little grass clippings get stuck in them and even my shop vac won't get them out easily. They get into the fiber. The mats are not like a carpet. More like the fuzzy half of Velcro.
