FP-DE/FS-DE alternate OEM spark plug recommendation

Not with the ZFR5F-11s.. I went with a colder plug and yeah not a good idea. Back with the 5 heat range my car feels great.

I love the long-reaches though.. I absolutely won't consider going back :)

Ok no more ZFR6F-11 plugs for me.. back a step warmer to the ZFR5F-11s. Guess I really didn't need the colder plug. The car pulls noticeably better (and that's with my admittedly bad butt-dyno), and is all around a lot smoother. No more low stumbling idle either.

Anyone know what these plugs are telling me? Doesn't the plug on the top look absolutely ragged? That's after 500 carefree miles with no misfiring or anything.. just totally normal driving. The bottom plug of course is a brand new one.. the 5 heat range though.

Noticing all the crap on the threads, I did my best to get down in there and clean out.. anyone have tips on cleaning in there? My method of a rag wrapped around a 12" extension on my ratchet and just pushing it down there sorta seemed to work but there must be a better way. Do they sell like a large pipe cleaner that does that sort of thing?

chris, this might help...

So can I just go to Auto Zone and ask for the 6 heat range long reach ZFR5F-11 for my MP3 and they will know what I am saying? Or should I go to the dealer?

I got mine from the dealer (because I work there) and they had to special order them so the availability at AutoZone or the like is questionable.

It's the ZFR6F-11 if you want the 6 heat range one. But yeah, they'll know what you are saying. At Advance Auto Parts they have to do a part number cross reference to look up their part number equivalent (in order to find it in the back).

I don't know if something is up with my car or what but I think the 6 heat range was too cold for my car. They got bad looking pretty quickly (400 miles) and it feels so much better driving with the 5 heat range. Oh and yes I have the MP3 ECU in my car.. and tons of other mods, which is why I thought maybe it was time for the 6 heat range. I guess unless you are getting detonation don't bother with it.

Unless you have a turbocharged FSDE, I don't see the need to step down to a 6. I run 6's at 8psi daily but switch to the 7s for track days to help prevent pre-ignition. There is a small power loss from doing this though.

I ordered NGK Spark Plugs (ZFR5F-11) and NGK Spark Plug wires. It has been a while since I change plugs and I never changed out my wires. I changed it this past week... now lets see how this goes.

Well I did it this weekend. I got the ZFR6F-11 for my MP3 and they were gaped at .044. Well I am super happy with the outcome so far. Very smooth idle. Now what was way better was first and second gear pull. I used to have a studder almost like a bad motor mount and that was gone. Also I had so pinging in first gear around 6000 rpm and now thats gone as well.I will see how my gas is after my next fill up and computer readjust. I also did the upgrade to my factory ground wires.

i got mine from advanced auto parts... in stock, lots of them... maybe theres another car that actually uses these that makes them common?

ZFR5F-11 and 6 are stock on North American 1.6L protege's. There's no reason why any auto parts store shouldn't carry them.

did this last night...car feels great, but when i fired it up the first time it smoked alittle?? Anyone know why? Smoke went away now.

I cross referenced the plug and found out the 1998 Honda CR-V EX 2.0 DOHC uses this plug...I know when you go to the parts counter, they always ask what car (maybe easier for them to find the part), just give them this.

Hope this helps,

As you can see by my post it was done in Oct. and so far it has been fine. No ping sounds in any RPM range and my I am getting great MPG. It was a great upgrade for me.

turns out the JDM FSM states that the ZFR6F-11 plug is the "standard" heat range plug... the hot type is the ZFR5F-11, which is why some of you may had pinging problems... the cold type is the ZFR7F-11

Well when I ran the 6 heat range the plugs fouled pretty quickly.. even with the MP3 ECU, FS-ZE intake cam, underdrive pulley, full exhaust, etc.. so weird.

I tried buying some ZFR7F-11 at the auto parts store but they would have to order them.. so I'm going to just do the 1.8 coilpack conversion and probably buy the wires and plugs from sparkplugs.com

I am doing this too. Are you getting or already have the 2000 626 valve cover? Which plugs are you goin with next?
