Forks Upgraded for MP3

First of all let me say to the 2 impatient jackasses whom tend to think i have no life but to sit in an mp3 forum and feed them information. As a forum we are here to help one another with information that may somehow benefit each other in good faith. Most of us do have lives outside of here, for god sakes we own some very sexy(but slow) cars and i for one love to be out on the road feeling every inch of my mp3 AKA "BLUE DEVIL". But anyways the part number for the rings is GC011726Y. All of you guys should know by now that our dealerships are ran by monkeys that were rejected from the space program. If anyone still has problems finding it let me know i check on here momentarily to see updates but like i just said, this is not my life. Hope this was any use to anyone. And Doomer to ur comment i just wanna say the only thing that gets most of us excited over nutting is seeing the mp3 for the first time and thinking "Man that thing must haul ass".

Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to finally post something we have been asking for...

I love my Mazda but....it seems everytime I do a mod to it, the car starts to make noises, doesn't run right. Reliability issues!

Can someone sum up all the info form this thread? As I understand from reading, the fork RINGS were upgraded, not the actual forks themselves, AND only the ring for the 3-4th gear fork. Is that right?

So, I have a 2002 P5, the only difference in the tranny from mine and a new one is one fork ring, correct?!

Yes. That is the problem we are having, or atleast I had and many other mp3 owners i know had. Its usually the 3-4 forks that break because of the older smaller rings they had. But i dont believe anyone has had a problem with their forks breakin in a P5. Have they? I know it as strictly an mp3 headache.

i was driving with my new kartboy shifter in for a week .. so im in third gear and the sound of the intake seems to change to deeper tone and idk what happen but all of a sudden i get a clunking noise from the tranny that hits every tire rotates.. dealer put in a brand new tranny.. im still wondering if maybe it was shift fork related or did i really blow a tranny in a month?

heres how i drove

feathered the clutch off the start for racing to get grip then poped it
6500 rpm 1st
7200 rpm in 2nd and 3rd
redlined my car everyday at least 10 times

also had street slicks on front

Well then the end result shouldn't be surprising... And then we wonder why dealerships won't replace trannies for the rest of us who really have problems.

I don't have the problem yet but I am hoping to avoid the problem. Can I just call up the nearest Mazda Dealer (I bought my car used) and tell them about GC011726Y and ask to have it replaced? Not under warranty...I'd pay of course, so this doesn't seem to outrageous. Any help?

I wanted to bring this one back to the top. . .bumpity, bump.

This is all true! All Protege's before May 2002 have a syncro (sp?) ring that is different from those built after May 2002 (including Mazdaspeeds).

The old part number is M51017265 (I haven't confirmed that to be the number 100% yet, but have confirmation coming). The new part number is the "infamous" GC011726Y. This is the same syncro ring on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. The cost is about $45 or so (for one). Mazdaformance offers them for $31. So, I guess I'll be replacing these too! I don't believe that all three are necessary, but you might as well.

As for getting these replaced just to have it done. . .there will be a huge amount of labor for this (I'm guessing $700+) because it is like $400 just to take out the tranny and these are obviously inside that. Huge pain in the butt, but if you have everything else apart, why not! :D

I wanted to jump in here and make a bump of sorts. I just got my new tranny parts for doing my MSP LSD.... I also ordered a new set of shift forks (didn't order the 5/reverse fork though) so I will soon be able to show you if there is a difference between the "latest and greatest" forks and the ones that came in the car. I was told there was an actual change and part number update on the 1-2 fork. So we'll see if it is any different when I pull out the tranny.

The part number that Beavis mentioned above is a supposedly stronger synchro ring. It did not appear to be any different or anything else though when we were comparing it against the synchro rings already on the tranny... so anyway... that's the 2 cents... I'll post pics when I get my tranny apart and pull off the forks. (5/28-5/30)

Later.

Steve
