Ford Fiesta ST

Ford will be looking to reignite some of that early excitement with a new performance model, the 2014 Fiesta ST, and thanks to some leaked specs made available to Autoblog, we now have a very complete picture of what the tiny terror will look like.

Powered by a 1.6-liter EcoBoost four wearing a single turbocharger, our source says the ST will deliver 180 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, with a temporary overboost mode to extend peak twist. Both figures represent very healthy increases over the standard Fiesta's 1.6-liter Duratec engine, which chips in 120 hp and 112 lb-ft of torque. Like its Focus ST big brother, the new model will feature a so-called "Sound Symposer" to deliver a proper enthusiast's soundtrack. Shifting duties will fall to a six-speed manual, and the front-wheel drive five-door will also feature torque-vectoring technology and a three-mode stability control system for more entertaining handling antics.

The Fiesta ST will ride on a uniquely tuned and lowered sport suspension paired with 17-inch alloys (an inch larger than those available on the lesser Fiestas) wrapped in 205/40R17 Bridgestone Potenza rubber, and braking will be augmented by four-wheel discs with high-performance pads instead of the disc/drum combination on lower models.

Aesthetically, the Fiesta ST will receive a full performance rework, with a gaping trapezoidal grill with a mesh honeycomb insert that's a close kin to that of the Focus ST, along with a body kit said to mirror Ford's World Rally Championship racer (interestingly, Ford has already announced it will exit the series after 2012). Other additions include a rear spoiler, dual chrome exhaust tips and blacked-out headlamp surrounds.

When the hot hatch launches sometime in 2013, it will arrive in the buyer's choice of seven colors: Green Envy Metallic, Molten Orange Metallic, Ingot Silver Metallic, Oxford White, Performance Blue, Race Red or Tuxedo Black Metallic.

Given that Ford debuted the Fiesta ST in concept form at the Los Angeles Auto Show last year, we'd be surprised if the production model didn't surface in the City of Angels later this month. No word yet on pricing or availability, but logic suggests it will need to come in well under the reasonably priced Focus ST, which starts at $23,700.2014 Ford Fiesta ST to pack 180-horsepower single-turbo engine originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 16 Nov 2012 10:45:00 EST. now that chevy has the turbo sonic, fiat has the turbo abarth 500 and ford has a turbo fiesta i hope mazda will look at this and see that they need to join in. maybe them sleeping with fiat will reveal not just a new alfa miata/spider but an abarth type2.

Official numbers released yesterday. 197 hp and over 200 tq. There are very few reasons why this should not be my next car. Time for Mazda to step it up with a Mazdaspeed 2, or I think a lot of 2 owners will go for the fiesta ST next.

I'll be taking a very good look at what it would take to swap my 2 out for one of these. I want one!

This is an incredibly tempting vehicle! I have to keep reminding myself that I traded in my Speed 6 for the 2 to save money for a house! Maybe I don't need a house after all...

On second thought, the charm of the 2 is its go-kart like quality. I doubt this will have the same appeal.

Interesting, hopefully the ST treatment will address the suspension dept. Not a big fan of all the tech gadgetry of the fiesta though.

Agreed. My only complaint of the Focus ST would be the gimmicky 'Ford Torque Vectoring' or whatever, which is just an excuse to continue using open differentials...which should have became illegal BEFORE requiring TCS this and ASM that. Its nice to see all these mags praise the Focus ST endlessly, and say things like 'at least you can turn off all of its traction control wizardry with the touch of a button'...yeah...do that, and you're one wheeling through every corner like its 10-15 years ago...

But...being that its nearly certain the Fiesta ST will use the same system, instead of a true mechanical LSD...at least it'll have power numbers more acceptable for that type of system...A close friend is driving a Honda Fit Sport, and after this announcement is already trying to get in line for one next year.

Looks interesting, curious what they will end up asking for them in my area. Focus ST advertised @ $34,995 -- ouch!

^^^Sounds like they are only advertising fully loaded models with every option possible. Unfortunately there won't be a Mazdaspeed 2. They aren't even keeping the regular 2 past 2013 in the US. It's a shame too a 1.5 Turbo making 160hp would be perfect in the 2.

Guess we're just gonna have to do it ourselves.

I'm all over one if the price point is right (I've been watching news on the development like a hawk for the last few years). I was really hoping Mazda would offer a higher powered 2, even if it wasn't officially a Speed model. I'm not ready to ditch the 2 any time soon, but in a few years, I would definitely switch over ( I do hate the Fiesta dash+console Transformer/cell phone styling situation though - don't care for the gauges either). I'm also VERY interested to hear about that new 1.0 liter ecoboost 3cyl they'll be offering here too. That motor sounds like it's pretty amazing...

well there is the new turbo diesel skyactiv. i can imagine a special diesel speed2 with like 180hp and 300lbft of tork lol

at least mazdaspeed has the bspec kits for the 2.
i do like that ford based the ST after ther WRC car. which basically means other than "looks" its prolly nothing like the wrc car. but thats how all homogenization street cars have been since the 70s i believe. though mazda did make the 323 gtr based on the 323gtx... anyway. glad we are getting more euro ford cars in the states.

Yeah everyone was shocked with how much power and torque the Fiesta ST has vs. what was rumored. The wife has a 2012 S model sedan and I agree about the dash layout. Plus the 5-speed manual has such gargantuan throws. Looks like the 2014 refresh will have a much nicer interior layout and I bet the ST's 6-speed will be nice a tight.

my brother has the '12 fiesta, I do not like the shifter and how the dash looks. I also cant heel and toe in it for some reason because of that damn wall of the center console next to the gas pedal. I really hope there is a mazdaspeed2 or something of the like. having anything over 150hp in this light car will be very quick.

I just got back from the LA Auto Show where two Fiesta ST's were on display. Both were locked up as they are not the "final product", or some crap like that. I'm not sold on the looks of the new Fiesta the front end looks like a fish face. Looks aside, the power figures for the car are very impressive. I think Ford is on the right track with this car if they keep the price under 20K. Some people will like the looks of the car, and it may grow on me, but I don't think I'll be trading my 2 in for one.

ford recently decided to adopt more aston martin styling...

When this was first announced, I was all in on trading my 2 for it. But the more I think about it, the less I'm sold on it. We'll have to see what reviews say once it's out. But it's got my eye!

I would love to take a Fiesta ST for a strap. Here's a picture of my Parents Focus XR5/ST.

A relative of mine has one of those (in France), and it is some serious business!
