Ford ECU

Guys, we have a Ford ECU. Me and twizyours swapped ECU's as he has a protege, so I got his to have a more boost friendly ECU.

My mechanic said my ECU looked just like a Focus ECU, and then we looked on it and it said Ford.

Now this doesn't surprise me, but the reason for posting is this:

Focus ECU's can be chipped, so why can't ours? Do you think that the ECU's are the same, but maybe Mazda uses a different type of coding? We should get with someone who makes Focus chips and see what they think.

How long start to finish did the swap take? What was involved? Plugging/unplugging I wire harness into the ECU? Did it throw a CEL in your car? How about his?

The swap takes about 15 mins at most.

Pull up the carpet on the passenger side. There are 4 12mm (I think) bolts holdiong down a metal plate.

You will need a deep socket.

After the plate is up, flip it over and the ECU is bolted to the back of the plate with 4 12mm (I think) bolts.

Unbolt the ECU from the plate.

There is one 12mm (I think :) ) bolt holding the harness into the ECU, unbolt it and the harness slips right out.

No CEL in his car. My car is in pieces atm, so will let you know.

The bolts are either 12mm or 10, can't remember.

Yeah, I thought I remembered hearing they are 10mm. WHy is your car in peices? When did you do the swap? Keep us posted!

He is having his turbo installed rite now. I will say that Spoolins manifolds are very nice. Good quality. Looks better in person then pics posted.

The Probe/MX6 is the same thing. Ford stamped ECUs.

An option we often use is to get it reprogrammed. A company like Jet Chips or Superchips will take your ECU and reprogram it and send it back. For us they have the baseline programming to work from though.

I belive that is just the second gens. The first gens use MECS I. One 93 probe 2.0 liter actualy uses MECS II but cant remember if it is the amnual or atx.

Good point. Specifically I meant the 93+. I would assume the 93 2.0 with ATX is what you're referring to, as I own a 93 2.0 manual.

In any case we pretty much get them reprogrammed. Someone came up with a "chip" at some point, but I've never seen one personally. (I thought it was Superchips but the site is too slow to find out.)
