This was brought to my attention by a friend of mines. Its the Ford Laser in Australia. Its basicly a P5 with Ford emblembs.

Go to the links below to read the articles with pics. I knew Ford had a part in the making of our P5s but this is crazy.

In Australia the 2.0litre Ford Laser is called the SR2.

The Mazda hatch is an 'Astina SP20' (the US 'Protege5'). Mazda have recently released the sedan version, the Protege SP20 (I think the US 'MP3'?).

The SR2 styling is available across the Ford Laser range - including 1.6litre and 1.8litre models. Laser is soon to be replaced by the Ford Focus.

Mazda only build the SP20 with the sports styling. There are 1.8 litre protege sedans and astina hatches with much more traditional lines.

The SP20 and SR2 are basically the same car, (not sure if they come out of the same factory though), with different sheetmetal being the only real difference, and the mazda has the better, more polished interior and overall finish.

For mine the SP20/P5 looks much better than the Ford.

IF you ask me....it shows that ford isn't as stupid as they sometimes act...and that they know a good thing when they see it! :{D

The mazda is MUCH prettier. I wonder how much of our cars here are ford....

to the best of my knowledge....to ONLY part on our P-5's that is an actual ford part is the seat belt retractor on the passanger side.....

at least this is what I have been told. the rest is all from Japan and mazda.

Survey says? "aughhhhhhh."

It's so tricky to tell what is what. We could have ford parts made in America, shipped to japan, and installed there. we could have mazda parts made by mazda for ford and installed as ford parts there or here. we could have ford parts made here and installed here. we could have.....and so on.

As a general rule, ford plants usually make the chassis to cars. ford makes the chassis for the tribute (escape) and all the nissans. Thing is, it could be a ford plant in japan...oh hell, i'm not going into that again.

Basically, there are few truly independent car companies left. Everyone trades with everyone (of course that is an oversimplification). Porsche was one of the last car companies to be all-porsche, so to speak, and now even they take some A/C and electronics from ford (that could be Ford USA, Ford Deutche, Ford Japan, oh lord...)

As a general rule, cars that sometimes share with ford usually have "Ford" A/Cs, meaning A/C units manufactured by ford plants here or in central or south america, with some african. Ford A/Cs are in our Mazdas (and most if not all other mazdas sold in the states), Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, some Hyundia, Nissan, even some Toyotas sold in the Caribbean (I rented a Toyota truck in Bonaire, a former dutch colony, and the A/C was that familiar 3-dial ford, even had the same icons.

im done.

now, lets get the record straiught that i dont like the ford, but where is the mazda edition of that car with the bumpin stereo, ps2 and turbocharged engine???

wasn't really a surprise to me since i'm collection data for my new site ...
i've seen some of those badge engineered fotos and i think a conversion would be pretty easy (front bumper, trunk, tail lights etc)..but who would want that ? :)

LOL, This was a debate on the Escort forum long time ago...
The Ford escort in 1991 to 1996 was made in mexico @ a Ford assembly plant. Much of that car was built and design by mazda for ford.....The Ford Laser from 1989 to 1994 was an escort with the 323 gtx bp motor and yes you could get that all wheel drive too like the 323....
The US and Canandian Proteges from 1989 to 1994 were assemblied not built there in mexico.....It was to meet with US DOT.......
That ford laser is made by mazda for ford....
