For all of our insurance sake, don't crash your Speed 3

I owned an '02 Audi A4 and a '04 Mazda 3 for about 3 years. No tickets and a couple of (not my wife's fault) fender benders in the A4. My insurance was about $850 every 6 months. I bought a speed 3 in Jan 07. I expected a large increase in my insurance but it was only about $100. Not bad. I don't won't this to change.

On the eve of Valentine's Day a guy blindly pulled out in front of me. I was only going about 20MPH. His '97 Cavalier was totaled. I couldn't believe the amount of damage to his car- both air bags, windshield, front end, engine bay, doors, etc. all of it distorted beyond recognition. Me - bumper, hood, left fender, head lights smashed in. I could have driven it away but the grille pierced the radiator. I was thinking "not bad" - no frame damage, no suspension damage, no airbags popped. I figured parts might take a while to ship on a car like this, but I'd be back in business in 2 or 3 weeks with 3 or 4 grand in repairs. Well, I guess I'm the idiot!

Apr 25, 9 weeks later my car was finally back to me. The shop did a decent job and took way longer than they should (that's another story), but the bill? Holy sh*t!! I know the other guys insurance is paying, but we all pay in the end.
$9300! Thats 5.8 years of insurance payments! I'm not feeling sorry for the company, but damn.

The cost of parts is insane.
$823 for each headlight, just the plastic, no HID stuff. That comes off the old lamps.
$514 for the black plastic ducting for intercooler that attaches to the underside of the hood??
$297 for the radiator but, $551 for the fan??
The list goes on and on.

I've got money, I can afford this, but it doesn't make it right and it's not fair for everyone else.

Thanks,
Matt B

So I get a small scrape in the bumper of my previous car. I talk to the body shop were I have had several things done for an estimate. They ask will I be paying for it myself or is insurance paying. My answer is it depends on the bill, but why do you ask. They say they will prepare estimates both ways. So, I get the estimates, and they are different: if I am paying myself, it is about 2/3 of the insurance company cost, a "courtesy discount".

Now, this company is not going to lose money if I pay for it myself. Yes their costs will be a tiny bit less because they don't have to hassle with the insurance adjusters, etc, but I see this as a rip off of the insurance company. I don't feel sorry for the IC, but this raises the rates for everyone.

Another time I was in an accident which damaged a tire. The body shop charged the IC $500 for a tire I could have gotten from Tire Rack for $150.

The body shops are doing some serious marking up.

Yeah, and she hit me doing 45-50mph! Our cars are tanks!...lol

Wow. Glad no one got hurt - well, aside from that poor girls wallet once the insurance company applies that point charge.

i got hit in my rear bumper and the bill for the insurance was around 830......the body shop refurbished the old bumper and its like new, there was some panel damage and the bar that the latch for the hatch door was bent in a bit and they straightend it out...dam thats a pretty nasty hit tho.............o yea and the guy didnt have insurance and my insurance has to collect the money from the guy legally now which is a PAIN IN THE ASS

FWIW, insurance companies don't make a large portion of their money from premiums. They make them from investments and loans.

Yup, all the money we pay for insurance, goes to the insurance company, which is used to pay for the insurance companie's re-insurance.

Long story short: Following Fed Ex truck on the interstate, he blew a tire, I ran over tire.

Fed Ex was easy to deal with, it was the repair centers that were a pain. All of the estimates came in just under my deductible too (have it @$1000) I told each place to pull the price of the MS3 bumper, but two didn't, trying to low ball it and get business. Fed Ex sees that they are ~$200 lower, and so they go with them. Fed Ex cuts me a check, and I pay out of pocket. I was out of ~$200 until I got the shop to fax Fed Ex an updated copy of the estimate. The work they did left quite a bit to be desired too. Had to give it back to them because they didn't buff part of the bumper, and in doing so they overbuffed and hit the door ding guard over the wheel well. Haven't heard back from them on that, so I sent in my "warrenty" card with a lot of damning comments about their service.

Adding insult to injury, the fit on the bumper doesn't look quite right to me.
