Leave it on, vinyl from sign shop and heat with hairblower to stretch and smooth. Then just trim with a xacto, easy. You can peel it off change the color and back to stock any time you like! EASY! This works great for the flying "M", a little tougher for the letters....

To remove the emblems I believe you have to use a blow dryer and dental floss. Heat up the emblem to loosen the glue or adhesive then use the dental floss as like a saw between your paint and emblem. My buddy did that to his WRX, took off all the emblems on his trunk, looks hawt.
This is for the rear emblems. The front emblem will pry off on a temperate day with a screwdriver and a little patience. Get yourself some sandpaper (think I used 400 grit) and some auto primer, a color of your choice, and you're all set.
 
on mine, only the "Protege5" emblem was glued and had pegs. The Flying M and "Mazda" were just pegged in
