Ok, so some of you may know that there is no OEM flip key available for the MS3 and 07+ Mz3. There are, however, two blanks which can be bought and fitted so that a non-OEM flip key is possible.

1. With this system, you need to supply your own key fob internals as well as an extra transponder.

Available from ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-Folding-Remote-KEY-for-Mazda-3-6-323-2-BUTTONS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem41460a0a6dQQitemZ280347937389QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

This flip key is not ideal since the axis of the fob is switched 90 degrees, so it can interfere with the key release button.

2. Need to supply key fob internals only. Word is that the transponder comes with this key.

I did a message chat with the representative for this product (Olive Tang). It is unclear whether this comes with the transponder or not, so that I can not guarantee.

She said it would be possible to reduce the shipping fee if they use the post office, which can take 15 business days or more. If you want to go that route, the final price would be $30.44. Payment would be made by PayPal to: free5201314@hotmail.com

If you don't want to crack open your key to get the transponder out, the best way would be to buy a new key with a transponder in it. Dealextreme has one for ~$9 http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16640

**Disclaimer** much of this info was gathered from M3F, in this huge thread: http://www.mazda_3forums.com/index.php?topic=55575.0 - especially pages 22 through 25. Delete the underscore between 'mazda' and '3' to make the link work.

Thanks for posting this here. I've been meaning to start a thread about this over here since the information was brought up on M3F.

Also bear in mind that this forum doesn't allow linking to any other forums at all, so the link you posted is broken. ;)

Wow I have had the same idea for a few months now but no means of producing the part, glad there's an option now...Going to check it out.

I am a bit thick, but WANT the flip key

walk me thru the process please

I haven't personally done it yet, so I can't give personal experience. Basically, both of those options are empty shells that come with a blank key the flips out.

1. You will need to supply your own key fob remote. These shells require you to open up your remote and take the little circuit board out, and place it into the new shell that has the flip key built in.

2. With at least the first option, and possibly with the second option you will also need to supply the transducer, which is the little microchip built into the key which communicates with the car. This little chip is found with in the key, basically underneath the Mazda logo. That first flip key option (the one the definitely requires the transponder) has a little slot to put the transducer into.

You will notice that there are only two button openings on the shell. You may need to either trim off the panic button from the remote, or you can drill a hole to accept the panic button.

To remove the transducer: (borrowed from the original thread at M3F)

"I just took a key apart the other day for this. What I did was took a razor blade to the top of the key at the seam. The corners seem to be the easiest part to get into. Then I worked the cuts wide enough to get a standard screw driver into it. What you do is wedge the screw driver between the black outer shell and the white plastic part of the key. The transponder is tucked away in the white plastic so you shouldn't do any damage to it (it's to the left of the mazda logo, by the way). Once you get both corners deep enough, you should be able to fit the screw driver down the two sides of the top loop to the body of the key and just pry it apart. You can cut the entire seam of the key with the razor blade to make it a little easier to pry apart." - Riqah at M3F

HELL YEA, Someone on here needs to try this. I have been wanting a flip key FOREVER, and have thought about fabricating my own. But I never really figured out how. Finally a company came out with a blank

Reading through again, shouldn't we be able to do this with a canadian MS3 flip key?

Do you mean using the canadian flip key shell, and exchanging the remote circuit board inside? Is the canadian flip key the same style as the MX-5 flip keys? I've wondered if there was a way to exchange the circuit board with these, and somehow get the buttons to work, but apparently the boards are completely different.

As I understand it, the canadian MS3s use a different transponder system, so it would require completely changing out the internal electronics in our US MS3s to be able to use the canadian flip keys.

No. If you're thinking of swapping the board from your regular remote then the standard remote board is about twice the size as the OEM flip key remote..... it won't fit in. If you're thinking of just programming the Canadian remote to the US computer that won't work either as the systems are different. If you're thinking of swapping out the KEU, etc. of the US Mz3 with Canadian components that won't work either. Not only does it make the TPMS system freak out, but then none of the remote functions work.

Right now the use of one of these aftermarket cases is THE ONLY way to get a flip key/remote for a '07+ US Mz3MS3.

Perhaps another way to get the Alibaba style would be to convince DealExtreme to carry the product, so that we could benefit from the free shipping!

They have a product request page, so if we show a lot of interest they may offer the product.

So, two questions... This one does or doesnt have a transponder, and, has anyone got one of these working in the wild?
