Flex Pipe

hey everyone. this is my first post on this board, im usually at clubprotege.com, but this looks like a nice site.

ok now to my question. i have a 91 protege lx. my car failed inspection because i needed a new flex pipe. the garage wanted to charge $161(parts)+$71(labor) for a new flex pipe. i went to vip auto and looked at the flex pipes there... they are around $20 there. i asked the guy at the counter and he said the $20 ones wouldnt work... he couldnt really explain why, he said that it acts as a silencer or something. i dont see what could be so differant about a flex pipe and why the $20 one wouldnt work. anyone have any info on this?

the 20 dollar flex pipe will work. just find a mom and pop shop that will weld it up for you ...i got my catco for cost + 40 dollars labor at a mom and pop shop...i get everything welded at that same shop...just look around man and good luck

What they meant by $161 is a part, which is a not so long of a pipe that has a flex build into it. Sure, you can get flex pipe alone cheap, but try to get onto your current exhaust system is a different story. Like our fearless moderator said there, go around shop and see if some can fix it up for you.

its ~10-12inches long...as soon as i got mine off i threw it like the piece of s*** it is i now dont have a flex pipe, rather a 2.25 in. straight pipe from the header to the cat

i have a flex joint on the end of the header charles, its like a ball and socket
