First Mods...

This is what I'm going for:

1. Reliability - I don't wont to have a frequent visitors pass to the local dyno and tune shop. I want to bolt it on and have the upgrades be true upgrades not something that will increase my visits to the repair shop.

2. Driveability - My car will not be ran at any track. I drive it daily and want to have a little fun from time to time. It would be great to squeeze some extra MPG out too.

3. Quick - I want to continuously surprise respected cars (Evo, STI etc) when having a little fun. I don't believe in street racing but I don't have a problem with opening it up on rare occasion in the right setting.

I would like to get the most bang for buck out of my mods without turning my car into a fire breathing, vibrating jack hammer. I truly love music and would like to be able to listen to it when the mood strikes, which is often. I want it to start when I turn the key and move out when I hit the gas. A well rounded driving experience is a key goal.

300hp, 350+tq would be a great start (laugh). I don't intend to scab parts on till I approach the hp/tq range I'm shooting for. I would like to add parts in a very calculated manner. I have no problem with MS parts I just got the impression after a good bit of research that the COBB SRI and Dogbone mount was two very good choices dollar per fun factor and reliability. I am also very interested in the AP. If the MS CAI will work well with the AP I have no problem having the dealer put the CAI and let it be covered under warranty. Thank you all again for all your feedback and information.

Are there any special deals through the community I should explore before purchasing my intake and MM? I was considering using some of our sponsored vendors from here.

Just buy the Mazdaspeed CAI (intake) & CBE (exhaust). Fully warrantied if the dealer installs them, and people see crazy gains of almost 30whp with just those two simple bolt-ons.

The site sponsors can get the Mazdaspeed parts pretty cheap -- about $310 for the intake and $550 for the exhaust.

Small update...I spoke with the dealership I purchased my car from and got the following information:

MS CAI - Retail-$399.00, my price $312.00 They claim that they no longer honor but said they would give it to me because I purchased my car before the alleged cut off. Aren't I luck hehe.

MS CATBACK - Retail-$729.00 , my price $570.00 Same special deal as above.

I'm not sure how this compared with other dealerships but I'm not getting a warm and fuzzy in regards to feeling like the bang for buck factor is even registering.

I can get the COBB SRI for $170ish? With similar if not better gains? How tough can it be to swap out the Cobb for stock air box for servicing vs. paying the cost difference for their over priced parts? Warranty issues I understand but my common sense indicator won't stop blinking?

The only thing I'm not in love with in regards to the dogbone is the looks of it. Structually is must be a strong mount and if it is the preferred mount I definitely want it. I'm 99% sure I'm going to take the plunge on the mount today with the Delrin bushing. The intake situation is another thing  The blue cone filter is another minor annoyance with the Cobb but I can get over that. I don't spend time gazing at the engine bay any how.

notice they didn't quote you for installed prices. I guarantee they charge at least an hour and a half for the install of the intake and the exhaust, for a total of 3 hours. labor rates hovering around $100 an hour, that's an extra $300 for labor.

swapping the cobb for the stock air box would probably take you about a half hour to 45 minutes depending on how proficient you are with your tools. I've already decided that with my mods, I'm just going to accept responsibility for engine problems that I have and not worry about putting it back to stock unless something major goes wrong.

again, I have to advise against the delrin bushing unless you are going for an all out race car, and it doesn't seem like you are. also, these cars aren't meant to be all out race cars. they're meant to be a compromise between utility and performance. just my 2 cents.

**sigh** still torn between the Cobb and the MS CAI.

COBB - louder turbo, but not CA carb legal

MS CAI - Carb legal, but doesnt make the turbo louder

(bang)

sound is lame. just get performance.

i have no bling mods or sound mods, everything is done for performance. i have a TMIC unpolished and unpowdercoated on the way right now. I have a meth injection pump zip tied to the aluminum sheild at the back of the engine bay, a cone filter on an aluminum MAF housing, etc.

its all whatever.
