First Mods...

After a ton of research I think I've decided on my first couple mods. I believe the Cobb SRI and the TRZ Dogbone W/Delrin will be my first two mods. A local shop said that Cobb is changing the SRI very soon to include a possible shield assembly similar to the MS CAI, along with this change there is rumored to be a price increase. I chose the Cobb SRI because of the AP. Is the Cobb SRI noticeably loud with a stock exhaust? I'm ready for a serious increase of vibrations from my new mount but seriously hope they subside in the time I keep reading about.

I'm a little concerned about messing with the stock engineering, having emission issues and lowering the overall integrity of my car. Hopefully my concerns will be minimized by chosing the highest quality parts and installing them correctly. I am still in the process of researching the TBE that will best compliment my desire of no CELS, high performance and a nice DEEP sound at WOT.

yes, with the SRI you will be able to hear your turbo spooling and hear some BPV sounds as well. with stock exhaust you will hear it just fine. The motor mount will not give you as crazy of vibes as you think. The worst vibes you will get are just trims inside your car rattling when its cold or at low rpm's. I was scared about how the vibes would be but they are very small. your derlin isnt much different than my poly mount. the vibes will settle down with time like you have heard.

COBB is coming out with a box for their intake similar to the one from Bell Engineering and will feature ducting to route air from the front grill. From what I understand it will be an optional add-on to new and existing intake sales.

Any projected date for this add-on?

I plan to buy the SRI and mount early to mid March. Once I install the first mod it will be like a dam breaking and way to stop the addiction. (laugh) My car has around 2700 miles on it so the itch has begun. I really want to increase performance without turning it into a non sleeper. Certain mods there is no getting around the obvious increase in exhaust etc. I just want to minimize the attention and maximize the zoom.

Cobb sri + delrin MM is a great way to start. I would also definately throw some synthetic gear oil in there. Stiffer MM + better gear oil = the smoothest shifts you can imagine. I love it.

Honestly, the vibes on the delrin *may* be a bit much for you, if you are getting a rattling / clanking sound, yuo can fix it by using some epoxy to glue the metal inner bushing of the mount to the delrin part. My MM has to come out if the temps get below 50 degrees cause the vibs and rattles from the MM + the cold are too damn annoying for daily driving. above 50, and it runs super well.

Both items are also incredibly easy to install yourself.

instead of the turbo back exhaust, I'd go with the corksport downpipe and mid pipe. I'm all about the sleeper thing too, and I think these parts should add really good power without changing the sound too terribly much. the TRZ mount with the delrin inserts is going to vibrate like crazy I bet. if you're not annoyed by this go for it. I'd definitely get something stiffer than the one I got, as I am still getting contact between my intercooler shroud and windshield cowling. have fun man, and you'll enjoy this car. I sure do. in fact, since I got my cold air intake and bypass valve, I haven't had the radio on at all. it's too much fun to listen to.

If you're worried about reliability, stick with the Mazdaspeed parts. The dealer can sell you the "factory" cold air intake (CAI) and "factory" catback exhaust (CBE). If you let them install it, they even carry a warranty on those parts.

If you start slapping aftermarket stuff on there, the dealer is not going to be very happy. They certainly won't touch any of those parts if they cause a problem.

Frankly what I would tell you to do, before you start buying stuff, is to plan out what sort of engine package you're going for. Lego building and just throwing random parts together doesn't give as good of a result as piecing it together correctly from the start.

All too often people get in this mentality of just adding one part after another. Not accusing you of this, but I certainly would advise having an end goal in mind before letting the modification bug bite you. :-)

I wouldn't worry about putting mazdaspeed parts on. as long as you remove everything before taking it in, the dealer won't say poop. just my two cents.

um there are guys around here running full bolt ons you know TBE, Standback, CAI etc and still have a warranty when they take it into the dealership. Hell JCGEMT still has one with a 3071 on his car.

Lets not start the whole warranty issue again. But you should plan what your aiming for as far as hp, drivability, RELIABLITY, and all around what YOU want. Don't go for whateveryone else is doing if its not what you pictured for your car. If you just want bolt ons, then go with, its easy and relatively cheap. If your looking to make a beast, fmic, big turdo, meth injection, and and engine management are your best/most expensive route.
