Find an empty parking lot and try this... *ABS only*

2003.5 P5
I noticed something about my P5 that no one else has posted yet. I want to figure out if it's normal or I need to take it back to the dealer.

Find an empty area and get the car rolling about 10mph, turn sharply left or right as far as it will go. Now, hit the brakes! .. does the ABS kick in? Does the ABS light come on?

For me it feels like the ABS is engaged, but no light on the dash comes on.. should it? If it isn't the ABS, I have a major brake issues!

This happened to me pulling into a parking space once and it scared the crap out of me, I thought I was going to slam into a parked car for sure. :(

Braking in really tight turns (like when you are full lock for a u turn or parking) can trigger the ABS early. ABS detects differences in wheel speeds, and when you are at full lock, your front wheels are definitely moving at different rates from having to trace different length paths to get through the turn. I had a 96 Blazer, and I could easily trigger the ABS under tight turning conditions. My P5 is much better in this regard.

Under normal circumstances, your ABS light should NOT come on. It's one of those always working things.

If it *DOES* come on, you need to take your car to the dealer.

OK kewl, so it's relatively normal. I have never had an ABS equiped car. Is what I described sound like it's possibly tooo sensitive though?

lol does anyone read the manual these days... ABS lights only comes on during start up, and when it's not working. And I highly doubt ABS can harm you.

Agreed, the ABS is an all-time feature that doesn't need a light to signify it's functionality. Take the Mazda6, if you turn TCS off (Traction-Control-System) then a light will come on, automatic cars with O/D also have this light come on when disengaged.

I know a lot of people tried to turn me away from the extra investment in ABS due to the size (weight) of my car, saying it was not needed. I can honestly say, I'd never own a car without ABS.

ABD has saved me a few times. I've not experienced enough in driving to remember to all of the other crap you need to do to successfully not lockup and run off the road without ABS.

Although the 93 Corsica my mom had 10 years ago had issues every week with her ABS system. Let's hope that's not the case with these cars.

Umm...I didn't know P5's had ABS? Looking at my fuses...I don't think I have ABS at all. Can someone please verify this for me? I have a 2002.5 P5. Thanks!!

mrpopnfresh, ABS isn't standard on P5's so I don't know how you would be able to find out. You can try going about 30 and just stomping on the breaks I guess but that might mess up your bumpers. You should hear pumping noises when you are breaking hard.

Do you still have your window sticker? That will tell you if you have ABS or not.

ever try pullin the E-brake and then hitting the brake right after, ur pedals r so hard u automatically trigger abs, nutz, for some of the stunts i do i wish i didnt have em cuz they can get in the way, but for regular driving they r invaluable

Stunts? like Evel Knevil stunts?

mrpopnfresh: If you have side airbags, chances are you have ABS, too. They go together in a "package". :)

Ok...well no side airbags, no abs fuses....I'm gonna guess I don't have abs then. It would be easier to look at the sticker, but I'm not exactly at home. Thanks for the help everyone!!

US Spec P5's have ABS as an option.
Also, roof racks, side air bags are standard right?
And the spare tire subwoofer is an option in 2003?

CAN Spec P5's have ABS as standard equip.
- no side air bags whatsoever or the spare tire sub :(
- roof racks are optional.

I was sure that there are side air bags. My car isn't hear right now so I can't check, but isn't there a plastic piece on the side of the seat around shoulder level that holds the srs.

Please correct me if im wrong. Not that I am planning on crashing the side of my car.... Today anyways.

Amarek,

From the pictures of US Spec P5's I've seen, yes the sideairbags are underneath that "plastic" cover of the seats.

It's something I wish CAN P5's could have as an option at least.

I don't know about cloth seats but I got leather seats and the SRS airbag sign is on the side of the seat. I assume it'd just pop out tearing the leather...

The same thing happened to me...LOL, I freaked too. I've driven other ABS equipped cars and that was the first time I've seen that happen. There was some definite pedal movement. kinda weird, but, the wheel speed while turning thing makes sense.
