I was a little surprised by the difference in size between the stock and my winter set (goodyear F1 Allseason ultra-high performance) when i put them side by side (225/40); explains why my speedometer has been off.

I'm wondering why you went with such a wide winter tire?

valid question; I don't need dedicated snow tires, we rarely get a lot of snow (events and quantity) so I didn't want to compromise performance and ride by getting blizzaks or an equivalent. So, based on reviews on tirerack and a convenient sale, I chose the goodyear F1 ultra-high performance all-season which they don't have in our stock size. The closest that fit my second pair of stock rims were the 225/40s. For me*, it was the best compromise for winter driving. They did good in the cold, good in 2 1/2 inches of snow, but not good in 7+ inches of snow, it stayed in the garage.

* not to imply that this is a choice for everyone, clearly there are those of you who live significantly further north and NEED snow tires.

handling?

wiggum- did you feel the wider size affected handling? i've read a few posts saying the 225's made ms3's handle all kinds of sloppy.. not so for you? they look quite sick all fat and flat like that!

sorry, i didn't see this earlier. I just put these back on for the season two weeks ago. handling is a little different, not sure I'd describe it as sloppy, but I do notice an occasional wobble. They do ride rougher due to the decrease in side wall. I auto-crossed in these once last year and didn't notice a huge difference over stock...but, i'm no professional either. I will say that I will likely NOT buy this size or particular tire again; I'm getting old and need more side wall.
