filter needed in trans. fluid change?

The dealer told me that they don't stock the transmission filter for my 03p5 because it's not normally replaced as part of the job. I'm doing a drain and fill ATF change on my sportshift auto for the purpose of getting some fresh Mazda M-5 (long life) fluid back into the transmission. Any thoughts?

to my knowledge the filter is more of a screen. The flush at the dealership is done in reverse (so they say). This (so they say) cleans the build up on the screen.

The filter can be changed but it involves dropping the pan and installing a new gasket when it goes back.

I always change my filter when I replace my trans fluid (especially since our pans have a drain plug). To anyone who doesn't believe in this, I'm not going to argue the point, but it's a lot cheaper than having to replace a ruined tranny down the road.

dont listen to dealer, they told me to wash the filter instead of replacing it in my moms millenia, they didnt replace they said. but it needs to be replaced

I didn't replace it the first flush at 35k when having the AMSOIL synthetic atf pushed in while old being pulled out but at 85k now & have fresh batch of AMSOIL atf fixing to go in with the fresh filter this time. Have heard that it is not good to flush on hi mileage as it can push trash back into tranny & cause problems. Will be doing the 3 stage drain/refill this time while changing filter.

Yes, replace the filter. Many small passages inside the control module that do not need to be clogged up. It is an easy job - consider doing it yourself. At least don't let those dealership clownz touch it. Consider another shop.

Thanks

Ok, thanks for the response. I'm not clear on a couple things.

1) The dealer told me there's no gasket, just a silicone seal. They offered to sell me the Mazda silicone for 35 bucks. Does that make sense?

2) The car has a drain plug on the tranny? So I can just drain it and fill it with new fluid?

3) Can I clean that screen?

4) The prev. owner had the tranny flushed 25,000 miles ago and the shop used a standard high mileage fluid. I'm really just interested in getting the Mazda (M5 long life) fluid in there. So can I just drain and fill?

1. The factory just used the silicon form-a-gasket stuff, but there are aftermarket rubber or cork gaskets available, and IMHO, they're much less messy.

2. Drain it, but then take the pan off and replace the filter.

3. No, just replace it. Don't go the cheap route on something like your transmission.

4. You could, but I think you'd be better served by switching to something like Amsoil or Royal Purple.

You know where to get a rubber gasket? I'd be interested in going back with one of those. Not cork tho, I'd prefer gray RTV to that.

The Fel-Pro gasket looks like rubber, since it's black, but I guess I'm not totally sure.

What's wrong with cork? The gasket that I installed 25,000 miles ago is cork, and I haven't had a single leak. As long as it's torqued down properly, it's fine.
