Feelings about the 2026 CX-5 eliminating turbo and physical buttons?

Where did you read this? That sounds like the Toyota hybrid used in the CX-50. I heard the system for the CX-5 will be a Mazda design. Mazda also said the hybrid will rival the performance of the current 2.5T motor. If we are talking about a bigger/heavier car it will certainly need more than 217hp. I would think it needs closer to 300hp to be quicker than the current turbo. I have said it several times, Mazda already has a 326hp hybrid using the skyactiv 2.5 for the CX-90 PHEV. Why not adapt it for the new CX-5? I understand the CX-90 is RWD based but why couldn't it be adapted? It is centered around the same 2.5L used in the CX-5 anyway.

I don’t remember exactly where I saw that… it was an online auto magazine article. This far out it was possibly speculation. Mazda dropping the more powerful engine did prompt me to buy a 2025 model. Hopefully Mazda hasn’t decided to follow in the footsteps of their competitors with the CX-5.

It's possible Mazda realized they weren't selling many CX-50's so they dropped the turbo in the CX-5 to push people who want the CX-5 turbo to the CX-50. Won't work.

Too bad not even the Turbo has the power to do this. It needs another 100 or so and it would be perfect. Mazda could do it if they wanted to and offer a special edition.

Mine will look like such a special edition when it is complete.

Close but more daylight then August. They may of been clearing the 50's from the lots.

If it's any consolation, the 2026 RAV4 will be hybrid and PHEV only both with CVT...No more 2.5 NA with 8 speed. That could bring potential buyers towards the larger 2026 CX-5. Time will tell! Also when prices are known that could be a game changer.

Mazda is not alone dropping optional more powerful engine. In recent history, Toyota dropped the V6 in the 2013 RAV4, Subaru dropped the turbo in the Forester, Mitsubishi dropped the V6 in the Outlander, GM dropped the V6 in the Equinox/Terrain. Rough time for the enthusiasts

I bought a new V6 RAV4 in 2012, the last year the more powerful engine was offered. I bought a new turbo CX-5 in 2025, the last year the more powerful engine was offered. I am seeing a trend here…

But Toyota offers the Rav4 PHEV which has over 300hp and is significantly quicker to 60 than the V6 was. Mazda does not have such yet.
